Publisher's summary

Best friends Aubrey and George begin their magical hijinks in this first book of the Laws of Magic series.

At a weekend shooting party at Prince Albert's country estate, Aubrey and George find themselves in a hotbed of intrigue and politics. Together they discover a golem, a magical creature built to perform one task - to kill Prince Albert.

Aubrey and George are hailed as heroes for foiling the attempt on the prince's life - but who sent the golem, and why? Aubrey is far too curious to let the authorities handle this one, and he and George start an investigation of their own to get to the bottom of the royal assassination attempt.

Excellent!

I loved the audiobook as much as the book itself - the narrator was excellent and made the quality of the writing stand out even more.

Waste of time

Very poorly thought out! Not sure if this author understood the story line. Poorly organized.

A nice listen

Dark academia meets steampunk. & strong feminine characters, no damsels in distress here. The hero is quite relatable and, as it turns out, not the broody, sickly archetipe, but just a nice guy trying to do what's right. One of the major cons could be the fact that even though the plot is somewhat character driven, our central figures are teens that don't act, speak and think like teens too well. There is no teen angst, and I sort of liked that, but it might be a con for younger audiences. I'm starting book 2 right away.

Degas got me into this..

The only reason I picked this book was because Rupert Degas narrated it. After the name of the wind I think he could read me an ironing instruction manual and I would hang on every lilt and tone of voice. The book started with a bang and did not disappoint, enjoyed the characterisation and the story gripped me. Rupert Degas's performance again was superb. Looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.

All Time Favourite Series

What did you like most about Blaze of Glory?

The magic of this series, excuse the pun, is all in the fantastic characters, and the great magic system.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to the entire series in almost as many sittings as there are books.

Any additional comments?

I recommended this series to a friend who was a book fanatic. It has since been added to their top 5 list (along with authors like Brandon Sanderson). I recommend this all of my friends these days as well.

Kept falling asleep

The reviews were so good, Degas is my fav narrator, but OMG it was so boring! Felt like a crappy version of Potter meets Kvothe.
