Publisher's Summary

The fascinating, “upfront and unapologetic” (Kirkus Reviews) memoir of Richard Williams, a businessman, tennis coach, subject of the major motion picture King Richard, and father to two of the greatest athletes and professional tennis champions of all time - Venus and Serena Williams.

Born into poverty in Shreveport, Louisiana, in the 1940s, Richard Williams was blessed by a strong, caring mother who remained his lifelong hero, just as he became a hero to Venus and Serena. From the beginning of his life, Richard’s mother taught him to live by the principles of courage, confidence, commitment, faith, and love. He passed the same qualities on to his daughters, who grew up loving their father and valuing the lessons he taught them. “I still feel really close to my father,” says Serena. “We have a great relationship. There is an appreciation. There is a closeness because of what we’ve been through together, and a respect.”

A self-made man, Williams has walked a long, hard, exciting, and ultimately rewarding road during his life, surmounting many challenges to raise a loving family and two of the greatest tennis players who ever lived. Black and White is the extraordinary story of that journey and the indomitable spirit that made it all possible.

Must read by everyone... his name is Mr. Williams

This book has opened my eyes to so much. I finally found a kindred soul and I can denounce those who feel I’m dreaming past my capabilities. Just like Mr Williams I to know I’m supposed to be great and create opportunities for others. This book is a must read... by every race, color, and creed. I will read it a second time and take more notes . I don’t plan on failing... amen

Awesome

Loved it. A real story about overcoming and success - a must read! Reveals the story of a man and father who at one time wanted to die because of his circumstances but rose to the highest heights of life and fatherhood! Many lessons are taught through life experiences we all will face at one time or another.

A must read for parents and teenagers!

Everyone can take something away from this book. Mr. Williams would let nothing get in the way of his goals. Not just for his daughters, but nothing stopped him from teaching himself, asking questions, testing theories, and never giving up. He has been willing to die for what he believes in, are you?

Fantastic story of a master teacher

Richard Williams story is an absolute wonder. His ability to learn and grow and teach are unparalleled. He is a self-taught master teacher and his daughters prove it. King Richard is an American story of success in the face of racism. Excellent!

Truly inspiring biography worth 1000x the price

Thank you Richard. Everyone once in a while you read a book that is transformative and you will never forget. This is that book. 5 Stars is not enough. I wish this book could be required reading for all students and parents. I only wish I'd been able to read it before I raised my own children. As a white male, I hurt reading about the bigoted hatred you, your friends and loved ones endured and can understand now better what you carry deep inside. Thank you for showing us your amazing grace, drive, spirit, wisdom and faith. Thank you to your entire family for being such wonderful examples of grace and excellence. I encourage everyone to purchase this truly inspiring biography now. It is worth 1000x the price. AND...see the movie KING RICHARD...one of the great great movies of our time.

The book is filled with omissions

he had multiple children from multiple different women he was married three times and yet the book seems to focus on the two daughters that made something of themselves

He omits much of his marriages with the other women and the other children he doesn’t talk about

For listening to this book overall it was interesting but it is far from inspirational as the movie king Richard would have you believe

If you are looking at this book after watching a movie give it a miss. It’s all over the place

A respectable book.

I'm not sure if this is a book I would read again but I appreciate it for what it is. An honest account and a real insight to Mr Williams. Initially I started this book as I wanted to find out more about his parenting style, but actually I found I really enjoyed the beginning of the book more which re-tells his early childhood to him becoming a man. A respectable 3.5/5

A must read!!

An amazing read, this is not just for tennis fans. I have so much respect for this man, his firsthand account of growing up in the US as a black man has really opened my eyes to the white privileged that still to this day exists. This book should be read in schools as it goes to show you can achieve anything with hard work! Total respect to Richard Williams.

This story is amazing but…

I’m taking it with a pinch of salt as he fails to mention all the other kids he had that he abandoned. Sad to see that they didn’t even get mentioned in this book.

Incredible book. Nice narration. But this version has a LOT added/differing from the original version. Strange.

What a man!

I didn't think I would enjoy this book as much as I did. Being a Dad I found it very enjoyable and very different to the way I thought he would of raised such amazing athletes and Humans!

p.s I had no idea how racist America was as well as gang culture. what a pity
