Publisher's Summary

During a hot Melbourne summer, Jovan's cleaning work at a bayside hospital is disrupted by acts of graffiti and violence. For Jovan, the mysterious words that must be cleaned away dislodge memories of the past....

Intensely human, yet majestic in its moral vision, Black Rock White City is an essential story of Australia's suburbs now, of displacement, immediate threat and the unexpected responses of two refugees as they try to reclaim their dreams.

Audio version not great

This is one of those times that I wish I had actually read the book instead of listening to the audio version. The entire novel was narrated in the same over-acted, midday soap opera, deep, voice. I found myself listening to the words and trying to imagine relevant paragraphs in a lighter tone. Not particularly enjoyable. There were also quite a few skips and irregular time intervals between paragraphs making the storyline difficult to follow at times.
