Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Less than a year after joining the Theology of Joy and the Good Life project at the Yale Center for Faith and Culture, Angela Gorrell got word that a close family member had died by suicide. Less than a month later, she lost her father to a fatal opioid addiction and her nephew, only 22 years old, to sudden cardiac arrest. The theoretical joy she was researching at Yale suddenly felt shallow and distant. But joy was closer at hand than it seemed. In The Gravity of Joy, Gorrell uses her search for authentic, grounded Christian joy to reflect on the larger societal need for joy.

Publisher's Summary
Angela grew up in an all-black upper-class neighborhood in Virginia Beach. Being raised by conservative parents, street life was almost nonexistent. Her college years at Hampton University would truly educate her; not only in school, but also in life. She never imagined the attention her body and beauty would bring her.
Angela finds herself torn between Mac, a successful real estate broker, and Damien, a young Jamaican hustler from Brooklyn. Both show Angela love in their own way, and her choice will be her destiny.

new narrator..Please
This book may have been much better with a better narrator. The inappropriate pauses, mispronounced words, and overall sound of her reading this made it a struggle to get through. It appeared as if there was a lack of preparation on the narrator's part.
The overall story was decent..nothing we haven't seen in movies or heard in rap songs. I did enjoy the homage to the 90's!!

Just ok
I didn’t like all the pauses before each chapter. This book could’ve been shorter. A lot of the character stories had no purpose. Therefore they shouldn’t have been in the book. The ending was rushed. The last chapter was all over the place. What was the purpose of the friend Jasmine? What was the purpose of the drug dealer seeking revenge but never did. Were these characters added for a second book?
