Publisher's Summary

Spider Shepherd's MI5 controller, Charlie Button, has gone rogue, using government resources to get revenge on the men who killed her husband.

Spider is told to betray her. Worse, he's asked to cooperate with his nemesis at MI6, Jeremy Willoughby Brown, in taking Charlie down.

Meanwhile Spider's 16-year-old son is caught with drugs. But the drug police offer Spider a deal: go undercover, unmask a local dealer and his son will go free. Spider has no option but to cooperate. There's little time to debate because another high profile mission is about to engulf him.

Along with everything else, it's down to Spider to stop the assassination of a head of state on British soil.

Hugely enjoyable

If you could sum up Black Ops in three words, what would they be?

Tense, Exciting, Believable

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the way that this story went from one place to another and dealt with a number of issues before coming to a conclusion where all parties met. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I can't remember anything specific

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh in parts. Being ex-service I like the way the banter rolls into the story.

Any additional comments?

I am a huge fan of the narrator but I think he has made a mistake with one of the characters in this book. Otherwise this was Thornley at his best. I quite like the way Mr Leather puts his stories together.

Pacy thriller but a bit flawed

Where does Black Ops rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

If the best book was a 10, I guess I would make this 6 or 7

What other book might you compare Black Ops to, and why?

Probably in about the same category as Lee Child and Mark Dawson books. First response by Stephen Leather was a much better book though.

Which character – as performed by Paul Thornley – was your favourite?

Characters were all performed well but due probably to the editing, the characters, especially Spider and Lex Harper, who sounded very similar, got confused.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really

Any additional comments?

The various story strands took a bit too long to come together and I almost gave up in the middle and began to wonder if there were actually 3 separate stories going on. When they finally did come together, the story didn't seem that credible. I normally like Paul Thornley's narration but either by his own choice or the editing, chapters merged and took a few moments to realise that you were listening to another strand of the story.

Spider at his best.

Great story well read by Paul.
Now on to number 13 in the series,I'm sure it will be just as exciting and you won't be able to switch off.

Slightly formulaic, no heartbeat raising moments

I always look forward to the next "Spider" episode but have lately become a tad disenchanted.
No significant action anymore, slow almost plodding......, perhaps Leather had had his day?
