Publisher's Summary

It is 1667, and the mighty naval war between the Dutch and the English still rages. Sir Francis Courteney and his son Hal, in their fighting caravel, are on patrol off southern Africa, lying in wait for a treasure-laden galleon of the Dutch East India Company that is returning from the Orient. They have a letter from Charles II sanctioning them to hunt down and capture enemy ships "beyond the line".

So begins a dramatic quest for adventure and the spoils of war that sweeps the Courteneys from the settlement of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa and on to the Great Horn of Ethiopia far to the north. It was a time when international maritime law permitted acts of piracy, rape, and murder otherwise punishable by death.

For the Filthy

I began listening and enjoyed it as much as a star wars movie, but it quickly turned prurient and so I turned it off and won't listen to this author again.

Not the complete book, or even close

Please don't waste your money or credit on this "book". It is an insanely abridged version with little to no relevance to the full book. Total garbage waste of credit! I had waited for this book to get released in audiobook, next time I'll make sure its not a quick hit to steal peoples money.

Missing parts!!

I’ve read this book and I love this book - but this audiobook is complete and utter shite! Parts are missing and there are weird jumps in it. Sad that a fantastic story gets ruined like this

Feeling misled

This is a heavily abridged version of the actual story. This version has large parts of the story that is missing. It lacks the depth and interest of the original book and is no longer reflective of the authors work.

Very disappointed

I've read this book before and thought I would work my way through all Wilbur Smith's audible books. However this audible book is missing half the story. Not sure if the narrator purposely skipped half the story or just got bored reading the story!

good but

good story as always with Smith, the Courteney saga in another era, but abridged versions always seem to be lacking.

Abridged? Butchered - did the Buzzard edit it?

This is one of my favourite books. It's okay, if like me you only got this short version to recap before reading the Golden Lion. But if you haven't read the whole story before don't bother with this. If you're old enough to remember watching TinTin - it's like that!!

Extremely abridged

Extremely abridged version of an excellent book, really disappointed as the whole story was compromised as it was difficult to follow the storyline.

A Courtney Classic. Great narrative by M. Shaw.

mastifully narrated, you feel like you are a part of the crew. Ready to draw your cuttlefish and join the melee.
