Publisher's Summary

Most people ignored the outrageous reports on the news. But they became too frequent, they became too real. And soon, they began happening down the street. Then the Internet died. The television and radio went silent. The phones stopped ringing. And we couldn't look outside anymore.

Malorie raises the children the only way she can; indoors. The house is quiet. The doors are locked, the curtains are closed, mattresses are nailed over the windows. They are out there. She might let them in. The children sleep in the bedroom across the hall. Soon she will have to wake them. Soon she will have to blindfold them. Today they must leave the house. Today they will risk everything.

Critic Reviews

"A book that demands to be read in a single sitting, and through the cracks between one's fingers. There has never been a horror story quite like this. Josh Malerman truly delivers" (Hugh Howey bestselling author of )

Rivetting

Hooked from the first. I had to keep listening. I had to finish. Katherine Mangold did justice to a brilliant idea. She read with an intuitive idea of each character. It was well worth the just over 7 hours I spent on listening to this story. Do yourself a favour. Listen too.

Different Take on an Apocolyptic Tale.

I really liked this... I wanted to listen before I watched the film. The book is (as always) so much better than the book. The narrator in this instance does a great job.. I was with her all the way. great variations in the characters voices and believable!! I love the way the writer takes us on the journey, I felt I was there all the way.. I don't want to say to much as I’m aware of spoilers. Great novel, Great characters, Great story and a really interesting take on the end of the world as we know it... I've an Apocolyptic addiction and this hit the spot.

Possibly one of my favourite books in a long time!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and felt immersed in the story. Katharine the narrator is excellent and I really believed the characters and voices of the children. I actually got goosebumps at the end of the story. Loved every minute of this audio book.

Good, but....

This was a good story, but I didn't enjoy the narration. Make sure you click on the "sample" before purchasing. She's not terrible, but just not good. The story itself is really good.

Intriguing horror with a sub par performance

I’m not saying the narrator is bad. She is not. However she brings nothing to the table, and does nothing to enhance the experience. Often sounding fed up, or bored with the material, she makes no effort to portray the emotions, tone, nuances of the characters dialogue. This story has tremendous potential for a narrator to bring the story to life, yet Catharine Mangold misses the mark so frequently during tense or exciting moments that it often becomes tedious. I was surprised to find out she is an actor. Well Miss Mangold, I beg to differ! Otherwise, a thoroughly enjoyable story with plenty of suspense and subtle horror. For all of you that complain that nothing happens, I recommend a closer examination of the story, or failing that, go back to your jump scare driven, subtle as a brick to the dome - shock horror, and stop review bombing fine literature just because you lack an imagination and thus the capacity to appreciate the understated. I truly pity you.

I am totally gripped!

What a great horror/psychological suspense novel.

It is a chilling story! As the world as we know it falls prey to an apocalyptic plague of suicidal, murderous behaviour triggered by glimpsing an unknown creature, Malorie must do all she can to survive. DO NOT OPEN YOUR EYES!

I have half an hour left until the end of the book and I don't want it to end! It is so gripping and will have you on the edge of your seat with anxiety for the characters involved.

Disappointing in so many ways

Didn't enjoy this at all. The narration was fine but the story was full of holes. The premise was promising enough - some sort of "phenomenon" that seems to devastate the whole world - but the author never really gets into what or why. I got the feeling that he just didn't have the answer so just avoided it. Plenty of speculation from the various characters, but I would have liked more depth on what actually happened and how the human race could prevail. I didn't feel any sense of dread and didn't care what happened to any of the characters. I mostly left waiting for ANYTHING to happen to move the story along. It wasn't horror, it wasn't scary, it wasn't creepy and the ending was just frustrating.

Intense and different take on the apocalypse

I saw the Netflix movie but this was so much better. Something has caused madness within the population which leads the survivors to wear blindfolds. Mallory somehow has to survive within this new world with her two kids, this really is their journey. They travel along a river to hopefully a new start. There are some genuinely scary moments within this book but I’ve detracted a start as the book didn’t answer all my questions re the ‘creatures’. Found the narration suited the book.

Genuinely scary and offers more than the movie

I watched the Netflix movie when it came out and really enjoyed but I wasn't expecting much of the book but gave it a go. The writing style feels a little stunted at first with short descriptive sentences but it grows as the book continues. The author does a great job of describing some of the more terrifying parts and I really felt creeped out listening a few times. The characters are fairly well fleshed out but Mallory is the star. The story line seems to fit well with the times we are living in too in terms of what to believe and how to face problems although maybe I am seeing connections that weren't intended to be there. Either way it was a thrilling ride and way better than I had expected. I am downloading the sequel in the next 5 minutes.

Loved this book. So hard to put it down. I was hoping to get more infornation about 'certain things'. But that didn't actually take away from the story.
