Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2014 - Following in the footsteps of best friend, former SNL cast mate, and improv partner Tina Fey, Amy Poehler is releasing her first book – and I couldn't be more excited! The much anticipated Yes Please could not come any sooner for me after completing Tina Fey's Bossypants, Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, and Nick Offerman's Paddle Your Own Canoe - each of which praises Poehler for her witty, charming, and brazen attitude. With an ensemble cast of excellent narrators joining her (Seth Meyers, Carol Burnett, and Patrick Stewart, to name a few), this book is shaping up to be yet another hit for the hilarious Amy Poehler. I can’t wait to listen! —Rob, Audible Editor

Critic reviews

"Actress and comedian Amy Poehler's memoir is full of charm and life lessons, but what's REALLY fun is how out of the box the audiobook production is. Listeners know they're getting something special, unique, and a bit absurd right from the start when Poehler claims to be narrating from her own personal audio booth, built at the base of Mt. Rushmore. Poehler sounds consistently warm, funny, and genuine, and it's only a matter of time before she'll have you laughing out loud. When she's joined in "her" studio by Seth Meyers and Mike Schur to reminisce about Saturday Night Live and Parks and Recreation, it sounds like we're overhearing candid (and giggly) conversations between friends. Cameos from Carol Burnett, Kathleen Turner, Patrick Stewart (intoning strange haikus), and even Amy's parents add even more flavor. What a treat." ( AudioFile)

Good enough to speed through, not enough to rave

If you could sum up Yes Please in three words, what would they be?

Pretty funny memoir

Would you listen to another book narrated by the narrators?

I enjoyed the book but found myself surprisingly annoyed by Amy Poehler's narration/opinions by the end. Was still good enough that I read it quickly though

This is Tina Fey without Don Fey

If you could sum up Yes Please in three words, what would they be?

Funny, Sweet , Silly

Who was your favorite character and why?

you really need to tailor these questions. My favorite character was biff . WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK ....Amy .

Which scene was your favorite?

The Divorce books ...

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Any additional comments?

Bossypants, the Tina Fey book, was probably the best in this genre I will call Funny girls on NBC. Her book was so well put together , so funny and adorable that if I was an essayist that wanted to write a book I would stay far away from that because I would end up stealing large chunks from that book. Why am I talking about TF ? because I think some people are reading this book and going " this isn't like Bossypants AT ALL" ... no .. this is Amy Poehler . This is the white , blonde , non Tina Fey . Although since I love both of these women I kind of dug on patching them together. " I was leaving to go to NY with the upright citizens brigade even though I was told that I was going to be given a spot on the main stage with second city " ... in my head I hear Tina Fey " I was not given this job because I was a woman , I was given this job because Amy Poehler went to NY with upright citizens brigade and I was the next best thing" .

Amy's book is less structured. It kind of comes in at the middle , she had some fun , Patrick Stewart makes an appearance and at some point you start to see the SNL casts lives overlap in a weird mosaic like a time travel Harry Potter book . You pull a guy out of the audience on the and it turns out to be the guy who you do weekend update with years later ...when does things like this happen? But it is funny. Her stories are cute. She cried , A LOT during her SNL days .

She is brash , bolder , she apologizes less and is a little crazy. but she is good. and so is this book

Painfully Funny

Any additional comments?

The production and performance of this work is comic genius. The snorty-giggly-oh-co-workers-are-staring genius. This has kicked my from a deep self-pitying funk into perfect delight. I would kiss everyone involved in this recording just for the fact that my heart feels lighter. And I'm starting with you, Kathleen Turner.

Really Great as an audiobook!

I absolutely loved this book. I bought it only because I had just finished Bossypants and there was a lot of mention of Amy Poehler. Particularly, I loved what Tina Fey described Poehler as a strong personality. Even though I was less familiar with Poehler, my interest was peaked and I wanted to give the book a try. I cannot believe how much I loved it. I usually listen to two audiobooks in the same time period; one to listen to while I walk around, drive, do things around the house; and one i listen to while I am on the treadmill (something I hate!) to entertain me and make the time pass quickly. Poehler's book was so good, it got me through several workouts without me even realizing how much time had passed, a minor miracle since I usually look at the clock every two minutes and think, "For the love of all that is good in this world, when will this workout end?!"

The books starts off by telling the reader how terrible Poehler is at writing a book. Not true! But way to set expectations low Amy!:) She is simply someone I really loved reading about, the way she viewed the world, relationships, jobs, power structures, etc. I found myself laughing at loud at times, even though I tried not to, since there were people working out next to me. She even made me laugh during a anti-tech rant. I love tech and generally hate when people in my generation tell people to unplug and when they act as if tech is the end of the world. Poehler basically took this extreme stance, stating that tech really was the end of the world. I LOVED her rant and laughed far more often than I imagined I would. I hope she writes another book (though the chances seem slim, since half the book was about how much she hated writing the book).

So much more than funny

Absolutely loved this book. It is funny and warm and made me feel like we are long sisters :-)

Couldn't stop reading it! Even if you've read the book I highly recommend listening to her narrate. Impressive performance.

This book is essential

What made the experience of listening to Yes Please the most enjoyable?

I would tell anyone to listen, not read, this book. Amy Poehler and her guests voices make this book shine. Hearing the stories and words of simple wisdom in Poehler's own voice is what allowed me to listen to this book (all 7+hours of it) in two days.

What did you like best about this story?

Everything

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I listened to it in two days. I listed to 23/35 chapters the first day. I only stopped because my phone died.

Any additional comments?

This is a wonderful book. Smart, witty, and exactly how you would imagine Amy Poehler's thoughts to come across. Please read this, you will not regret it.

Worth your time

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Everything you would except from Amy Poehler. She fearlessly and honestly brings not just her best self, but herself. A generous narrative of admittedly imperfect, flawed, and hilarious female human person.
