Publisher's Summary

On television, as the star of the popular Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Kevin Sorbo portrayed an invincible demi god. He relished living the part—putting in 14-hour days on set, doing his own stunts, and relentlessly working out at the gym. Until one day, it all came to an abrupt end.

Now, for the first time, Sorbo shares what viewers didn’t know: he suffered three strokes from an aneurysm in his shoulder that had been radiating blood clots throughout his body, likely for months. He was left partially blind and entirely incapacitated at just 38 years old. Appearances are everything in Hollywood, so Sorbo and the production studio hid the full details of his condition from the media. After all, how could the strongest man in the world be… fragile?

To continue filming Hercules, the number-one worldwide syndicated TV series at the time, they frantically reworked scripts and revamped production to allow for the star’s severely limited involvement. But as the effects of the strokes persisted—with painful, mysterious, debilitating symptoms—and physicians could offer few answers, Sorbo grew increasingly despondent. What happens when your entire identity vanishes? True Strength is the story of how one man faced the unimaginable and ultimately found the real measure of success.

With tongue-in-cheek humor and an unfailingly candid voice, Sorbo reflects on his childhood in Minnesota, his early modeling and acting days, and his hard-charging charmed life in television. He recounts the onset of his stroke symptoms, the frightening hospitalizations, his battle with depression, and fighting for a recovery that defied medical expectations. And how, through it all, love conspired to save him from missing out on what matters.

With this refreshingly honest account of celebrity, personal tragedy, and the power of letting go, Sorbo aims to blaze a trail for anyone who may have suffered a serious setback in life and is struggling to find their way forward.

What the Critics Say

"Sorbo is candid about the hopelessness and resentment that characterized his slow recovery, his frustration with contradictory medical advice and holistic therapies of varying effectiveness and the stress his condition placed on his new marriage." (Kirkus Reviews)

"[A] compelling memoir…. Throughout his chatty tale, [Sorbo] drops enough Hollywood names to make any Us Weekly reader happy." (Booklist)

    "Great story soothing narrative"

Now I understand Kevin Sorbo's painful journey from fame to humble family man, never would've imagined the pain he was in watching all of hercules, it's a great listen God bless him and his family.

"Lengthy and a little all over the place but still worth a read"

I had wanted to read this book since it was released and was excited to find it on audible. Having never watched Hercules but was a fan of Kevin Sorbo, I was excited to read an inspirational story of overcoming adversity. The underlying story is one of a miracle and finding that inner strength. Unfortunately the story is extremely extremely long and is more a story of leading up to and during his days as Hercules. The mini stories that are injected are there to set up a point for the reader to grasp a certain idea of how he relates it to his illness but they are so all over the place that it is at times hard to follow. This in my opinion overshadowed the purpose of the book and the message he was trying to convey.

The book is worth the read or listen but approach it with the understanding that it will take a large investment of time and patience with no pre conceived notions.

    "Great book"

I loved hearing this story and was so grateful that Kevin put his story out there for the world to hear about his difficult struggles and his complete journey back. Some parts made me laugh out loud while others made me cry. Thank you Kevin Sorbo for sharing your journey.

"Trying to describe it, would lead to another book!"

As i said i would be writing another book if i said all i wanted to...Wow...thank you Kevin, Sam, Bradeon, Shane, & Octavia Sorbo and family, with friends for all of this ! Thank you for having the bravery to share this story Mr. and Mrs Sorbo! Thank you Jesus for letting me get to hear about this family and the stories of life you helped, and made with them, and will continue to do. Please don't hear this comment as a religious statement. ITS NOT! I have spent my small life looking for Jesus in movies, and music, and always in people.. and i found Him in here! More proof that there is something more at work in all things, in all ways! In the pain, and comes with the Joy! Ahhh....see whats happening I was starting to write a book! Mr. Kevin Sorbo thank you for your series, and movies! Mrs. Sam Sorbo thank you for your radio, and talks. The 3 Sorbo Kids; Bradeon, Shane, and Octavia- thank you for sharing your parents! ITS NEVER EASY!

    "More than expected"

I didn't expect what I heard here, but as I approach 70, it gives me hope that not everyone in the entertainment industry is phony. This admission of vulnerability and humanity is both moving and inspiring.

    "A really terrific memoir"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely! Not just to HERCULES fans, either. I'd recommend it to people interested in a showbiz autobiography that accurately portrays the huge demands made of actors and crews in weekly television production (Sorbo was only sleeping 4 1/2 hours a night during the first years of HERCULES, and working the rest of the time) and to people interested in recovery from brain trauma equally. The majority of the story is how he and his wife dealt with a terrible illness, but the slice-of-life bits as both a jobbing actor in the early 90s and as a TV star on a hit show are great as well.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Personally I loved Sorbo's account of getting the call that he'd been cast in LOIS & CLARK in the days before cell phones, when he had to pull over to a pay phone at the top of Barham Blvd. to get the news... followed by the crushing blow the next day that the network had decided to go another direction. It encapsulated the highs and lows of a Hollywood career at once, but was bearable knowing that he would land HERCULES not long after.

    Any additional comments?

Sorbo is a wonderful narrator of his own story, and his wife Sam Sorbo (a key figure in the story) does a great job narrating portions from her point of view as well as bits written by Sorbo's colleagues and crew like Bruce Campbell, Michael Hurst and others.

While the focus of this book is Sorbo's battle with his illness and betrayal by his own body, the all-too-few recollections we get from the set of HERCULES prior to his strokes are wonderful as well. So much so that I would love to see a follow-up memoir all about his time in New Zealand filming the show. The time after the strokes is well covered here, and I doubt he has any memories from that period that aren't about how awful it was to try do all that was asked of him while in such pain, and hiding the magnitude of that pain from most of the people around him.

This is without a shadow of a doubt the best book I've listened to since joining Audible.

Kevin and Sam's story should be compulsory listening for anyone who is going through a life changing illness or accident.

I love Kevin Sorbos' voice it is calming and rich. well read and made me contemplate my own self/shadow and impact that had on me post a significant medical issue. whilst i have never been an athlete at the same level i too realised i was not immortal in my mid 40's so the account resonated with me on a number of levels. great listen.
