Publisher's summary

Moving, harrowing, and ultimately uplifting, Lori Schiller's memoir is a classic testimony to the ravages of mental illness and the power of perseverance and courage.

At 17, Lori Schiller was the perfect child - the only daughter of an affluent, close-knit family. Six years later she made her first suicide attempt, then wandered the streets of New York City dressed in ragged clothes, tormenting voices crying out in her mind. Lori Schiller had entered the horrifying world of full-blown schizophrenia. She began an ordeal of hospitalizations, halfway houses, relapses, more suicide attempts, and constant, withering despair. But against all odds, she survived.

In this personal account, she tells how she did it, taking us not only into her own shattered world, but drawing on the words of the doctors who treated her and family members who suffered with her.

Absolutely brilliant

I loved this book. It was fascinating and moving to hear a personal account of the experience of a psychotic disorder. Very eye opening, well written, and well narrated.

Moving and vulnerable

Hearing Lori's story was incredibly moving and inspiring. I think hearing Lori's story opens up the discussion about mental illness and the stigmas surrounding those struggling. Her story was true to her diagnosis, interesting, and vulnerable. She dives deep into her deepest trenches and highest mountains with her mental illness. I highly recommend this book.

Eye-opening.

An eye opening account of what it feels like to face a condition that seems absolutely impossible to overcome. After losing a family member to suicide because they just couldn't fight the voices in their head any longer, I have a better understanding of what they possibly faced. I'm thankful for the stories such as this one that shines a light on the illness and makes it less stigmatized. I'm also extremely grateful that treatment has come so far and there's a real chance that sufferers can come out on the other side and have somewhat normal lives now. The only thing I found hard to listen to was the parents sometimes seemed like they were flaunting their wealth in discussing their daughter's disease and at one point her Mom spoke about her "normal" sibling that sounded quite harsh. Makes me wonder if the dad had been less worried about the people at the country club finding out and spending less time in denial, maybe he could have been there for his daughter sooner. All in all, a great book if you want to know what can be happening in someone's mind when they are afflicted.

The most accurate account I've heard

This is very close to my own experiences in my multiple stays in Acadia and Seton in Maine. It is truly inexpressible the pain in not being able to tell anyone about the very real experiences that only you can understand, but this is as close as most people will ever be able to understanding.
