Publisher's Summary

Winston Churchill is perhaps the most important political figure of the 20th century. His great oratory and leadership during the Second World War were only part of his huge breadth of experience and achievement. Studying his life is a fascinating way to imbibe the history of his era and gain insight into key events that have shaped our time.

In political office at the end of WWI, Churchill foresaw the folly of Versailles and feared what a crippled Germany would do to the balance of power. In his years in the political wilderness, from 1931 to 1939, he alone of all British public men, continually raised his voice against Hitler and his appeasers. For over 50 years, he was constantly involved in, and usually at the center of, the most important events of his age. It was, however, his obduracy on matters of principle, his fortitude in the face of opposition, and his perseverance in standing alone that defined him.

What the Critics Say

"Manchester is not only a master of detail but also of 'the big picture'....I daresay most Americans reading The Last Lion will relish it immensely." (National Review)
"[Manchester] can claim the considerable achievement of having assembled enough powerful evidence to support Isaiah Berlin's judgment of Churchill as the largest human being of our time." (Alistair Cooke)

"One of the greatest biographies ever written."

William Manchester writes this book and Frederick Davidson narrates to perfection. I only wish there was a masterpiece checkbox that I could check.

    "Fascinating detailed account"

Very detailed account of Winston and the world he came from. I sensed a bias from the author painting his view of Churchill at times however the book was far from devoid of criticisms about him

    "A Fine Biography "

Reccommend this to all Churchillians and lovers of history. A comprehensive study of Churchill's boyhood, youth, military adventures and early success in Parliament, and his many missteps as well and wilderness experience. Did not care for the narration. Made it difficult to stay awake.

    "Loved everything about it!"

Thoroughly researched biography about one of history's most consequential men. There is so much more to Churchill than the war time leader that most of us are familiar with. Few get beyond his most famous quotes. This work dives deep into his life and times to help you better understand the man, his genius and his contributions to our world. It is a highly entertaining narrative read by a narrator perfectly suited for the task. One of my all time favorites...this is the first audio book I have listened to twice.

    "Message to Tantor Producers..."
    Any additional comments?

This performance is the second in a row from Tantor made in 2007 which is totally awash in pops and microphone bumps and insesant talking in the background!!! It's impossible to lose yourself in a recording when there is chatter chatter chatter. GET A SOUNDPROOF STUDIO and rerecord this book and others which suffer this problem. I won't return this one because I like the story too much. But I already returned the other book with this problem (John Keegan's Six Armies in Normandy). If you doubt that there is a problem with this recording please consult chapter 5; (41:04-41:30) for the greatest hits of unintended recording. The rest of the chapter is also quite bad for background talking. So: new studio, rerecord; give us all a copy of the new recording.

    "Enthralling"

A depiction not only of Churchill's early life, but of the character and circumstances of the Victorian world that shaped him. If Churchill had died at the close of this volume — before performing any of the great feats with which he is associated today — Manchester's work would stand as a testament to why he still ought to be counted among the most visionary statesmen of his generation.

"A staggering work. Onward to part 2!"

Before you dismiss this as an insurmountable goal, even in audio form, think again. You will gain a greater understanding of his whole time period through the slow but never boring trot through every detail of WC’s pre-WWII life. And the narrator is just as phenomenal.

    "Unending boring minutiae"

Much more about Churchill and his social setting than I can deal with. Almost cancelled a third of the way but I respect him so much l continued. Very tough while doing my walk, especially with British reader.
