Publisher's Summary

Thirteen years ago, Moab Is My Washpot, Stephen Fry’s autobiography of his early years, was published to rave reviews and was a huge best seller. In the years since, Stephen Fry has moved into a completely new stratosphere, both as a public figure, and a private man. Now he is not just a multi-award-winning comedian and actor, but also an author, director, and presenter.

In January 2010 he was awarded the Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards. Much loved by the public and his peers, Stephen Fry is one of the most influential cultural forces in the country. This dazzling memoir promises to be a courageously frank, honest and poignant read. It will detail some of the most turbulent and least-well-known years of his life, with writing that will excite you, make you laugh uproariously, move you, inform you, and, above all, surprise you.

"Sit down and have a chat with Stephen Fry"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

His wit, his extradinary use of the english language is delicious, and he paints a picture that is wonderful. Particularly so if you are familiar with time, location and people

Who was your favorite character and why?

Stephen is so wonderfully candid about all his insecurities and self doubts- he had me laughing at myself for illustrating my similar thoughts

Have you listened to any of Stephen Fry’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

not yet, but very much intend to!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When he was recounting his time as school teacher who had threatened punishment to a student, and when push came to shove- he had to show he had the beans.

    Any additional comments?

Very entertaining and honest- I cant wait for him to continue with the next chronicle!

What made the experience of listening to The Fry Chronicles the most enjoyable?

Stephen Fry's voice reading his own text is smply superb.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fry Chronicles?

    His childhood was very interesting.

    Any additional comments?

If you do not like Stephen Fry as a person, just as a voice othe tape, this might not be your thing.

    "Enjoy without knowing!"
Where does The Fry Chronicles rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Admittedly I've read 'Moab is My Washpot' thought to enjoy this, you need not to have read Fry's first memoir in order to grasp any part of the second. He must have learnt the knack of covering previous adventures in one's life journey from narrating the Harry Potter series. However, the effect here resembles more and Enid Brighton introduction and less a David Sedaris event, which may leave one scrambling for the many other memoirs one had published in order to grasp entirely the authors life experience. The thing I appreciated about this approach is if, like me, you have read many interviews and watched many appearances of Fry, you will take comfort in the repetition but also each of the slight differences he employs when retelling a tale, as I have.]He speaks more as I imagine he wishes, reading this book, then anything you have seen or heard of these stories. The listener will be enthralled, amused and nevertheless livid at the prospect of Fry's writing of a further chronicle!

A wide one! Several hours of verbal showing off with minimal substance. Should be paid to listen to it.

This is great. It's like Stephen has sat you down, as a good friend, to tell you some amusing (and heartwarming) anecdotes about how he accidentally became famous. Brilliant. The narration is utterly superb. What a voice!! I could listen to him recite the phone book.

    "Stephen Fry carries you away"

This is a thoroughly enjoyable listen. No wonder the book has topped the best seller lists here in Australia. I think that Stephen Fry could read a shopping list and still have my undivided attention. I listened in 40 minute chunks and I think that digesting in larger portions could lessen the enjoyment.

    "I love Stephen Fry BUT"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I know he loves his words but there were just too many needless ones.

What could Stephen Fry have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Edit it!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Mr Fry as the narrator did not detract at all.

"A masterpiece of tedious self absorption"

So far the only book I regret downloading, the author seems to have some difficulty understanding the diffrence between being verbose rather than eloquent. The tone is best described as Uriah Heep meets Brideshead Revisited. The only reason for purchasing this book is to understand the full meaning of the term ego.

    "Simply excellent!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in what makes other people tick (which, I assume, is most people).

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fry Chronicles?

There are a number of them but I guess what hit me particularly was Stephen's assessment of his reluctance to give bad reviews. A very understandable position.

Which character – as performed by Stephen Fry – was your favourite?

    Not applicable.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Mostly it made me laugh with recognition and the joy that someone being so honest and aware of their own motivation brings.

    Any additional comments?

A book, especially an autobiography, read by the author is always going to be more enjoyable. This book would be very enjoyable even if read by someone else so imagine how much more so it is when read by Stephen!

A thoroughly interesting story from start to finish - read beautifully (as one would expect!) by Stephen Fry who reveals so much about his early life and experiences. I very much look forward to reading more from him.

"I hate to move with the crowd but..."
Where does The Fry Chronicles rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Mr Fry's book has been high on the list of most popular for so long and that was enough to put me off for quite a while, a moment of weakness inevitably came and the most annoying thing happened.

I loved every second, insightful irreverent interesting and there is clearly a reason it's so well loved. The most disappointing lesson I learned is, follow the crowd more often.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Stephen himself.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Mr Fry the pipe smoking Rugby referee.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    The end.

    "My Sunday Fry"

My first experience of an audible book. As I have always loved Stephen Fry's voice, I could not imagine myself being disappointed by whatever he read. Not only was I not disappointed by the intonations, I was absolutely captured by his personal story, which, I admit I knew nothing of. This glimpse into his remarkably varied life, told in a lighthearted, charming, self-deprecating, humorous fashion, had me captivated from the start. The seemingly no holds barred account is truly interesting and entertaining, and in parts downright hilarious. Cannot wait for the next installments - or imagine my Sundays without it.

    "The middle biography!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I love Stephen Fry - I think he is fabulous and a wonderful story teller. This is the middle book of his three biographies and is fairly long but it keeps the listener entertained with every word.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fry Chronicles?

The whole book is memorable because of his mastery with words!

Have you listened to any of Stephen Fry’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This compares with his other biographies really well and is in the same vain.
