Publisher's summary

Ken Foster never intended to adopt an abandoned dog. But after bringing Brando home, he notices how many homeless strays there are in the city. Suddenly, he sees them everywhere and finds himself unable to resist taking them home. But what he gains from them in return is far richer than his own expense.

As he forms relationships with each new animal, Foster finds solidarity between their misfortunes and his own, and unfiltered companionship through some of life's biggest hardships: the shock of New York City after 9/11, the evacuation of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, and the day his heart nearly stopped for good.

Critic reviews

"As if channeling the frank and fundamental nature of dogs, Foster's sentences hide little pretense or poetry....[A] charming account of a life among dogs." (Publishers Weekly)
"Warm, candid...not sentimental about the hard work of saving dogs but rather confident, reflecting [Foster's] belief that taking action on behalf of abandoned dogs is the right thing to do." (Booklist)
"An absorbing and quirky memoir....Foster's style is blunt, funny and poignant. He smoothly melds the events of his turbulent life along with the gritty details of rescuing abandoned dogs into a piece that goes to the heart." (San Francisco Chronicle)

Shirley from Memphis

The book started out exciting and hopeful but became mundane, boring in parts. The plight of many honmeless dogs was brought to attention and hints on how to save these animals. I did not need the hours long lists read to me of all organizations available to assist with dogs.

Very sweet read

I was captured by the cover photo of this book and the title too. The author lets you into his life and the part of his heart he holds for his beloved dogs. There ought to be more folks in the world like this guy. There are angels among us and I think Ken Foster is one. He steps up and makes things better for those innocent pups that have no voice of their own. I thought the book ended rather abruptly, but I enjoyed it all the way through.

For dog lovers

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A very good case for prohibiting some people from being dog-owners. Captures the essence of the bond between dog and owner beautifully.

Learned so much about Dogs!

If you support or if you're engaged in dogs rescue this is a MUST. Author takes you through his own journey in becoming a Dog Rescuer and how this "activity" became his style life. Some stories may break your heart but you will also laugh and learn many things about dogs, the way they behave and how to be a responsible owner. You'll also have the chance to listen tips for almost every possible situation. Sula story is great as well as Brando but my favourite dog character was the female Rottweiller Zephyr!

Interesting Story

I enjoyed the story of the author and his dogs. In addition to the story, there was some interesting info regarding dog care. I'm always a fan of books who encourage dog rescue, which is the main focus of this book. The narration was good as well.

Unscientific observations, v. poor narration

Would you try another book from Ken Foster and/or Patrick Lawlor?

No

What was most disappointing about Ken Foster’s story?

Lack of valid scientific observations (anthropomorphism plus!)

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Yes, I couldn't get past the first chapter because of this.

Sweet Story

Great book. I bought it on impulse and do not regret it.

If you have a rescue dog and/or realize the true meaning and potential in relationships with dogs, you'll like this book. I'm the type of person who hates seeing an animal stuck in a bad situation and can relate to the author.

Even though the narrator was good, I feel there could have been a slightly better choice. However, don't get me wrong; do not turn away from this book because I did not connect wholeheartedly with the narrator.

Awesome rescue stories

I was pensive of the turn out, but enjoyed thoroughly. Gives a window into rescue. Though it is a sad truth of life, it was very uplifting to know what others are doing for these living creatures!

Heartbreaking

I give it 1 star because I was only able to listen for an hour. It was too heartbreaking, but sooooo real. I wish i could of handled the book because it probably would of been awesome!
