Publisher's summary

Find beauty and hope by facing and dealing with the messiness of family life. The family is an imperfect institution. Broken people become broken parents who make broken families. But actually, broken is normal and exactly where God wants us. In The Beauty of Broken, Elisa Morgan, one of today's most respected female Christian leaders, for the first time shares her very personal story of brokenness - from her first family of origin to the second, represented by her husband and two grown children. Over the years, Elisa’s family struggled privately with issues many parents must face, including: alcoholism and drug addiction, infertility and adoption, teen pregnancy and abortion, divorce, homosexuality, and death. Each story layers onto the next to reveal the brokenness that comes into our lives without invitation. "We’ve bought into the myth of the perfect family," says Elisa. "Formulaic promises about the family may have originated in well-meaning intentions, but such thinking isn't realistic. It's not helpful. It's not even kind." Instead she offers hope in the form of "broken family values" that allow parents to grow and thrive with God. Values such as commitment, humility, relinquishment, and respect carry us to new places of understanding. Owning our brokenness shapes us into God's best idea for us and enables us to discover the beauty in ourselves and each member of our family.

Very disappointing

Despite expressing great concern for children given up for adoption—due to them having to deal with the fact they were rejected by their own parents for their entire lives—this woman chooses to give up here own grandchild.
I forced myself to listen to the entire book, thinking she would express some sort of regret. She did not. (It was also painfully obvious that this was a financial obligation they could shoulder.)
Instead, stories followed of how her own adopted children lived their troubled lives, and how it affected her. Poor her.
I have an extension library of biographies and autobiographies. This is by far the most self centered, selfish person I have ever listed to.

loved this book

If you could sum up The Beauty of Broken in three words, what would they be?

Trials/ Teenagers/ FAITH

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Beauty of Broken?

The stories of her trying to lead a "perfect life" and all the obstacles along the way. Very real to all christian mothers, daughters, sisters. Trusting God and thanking him for everything.

Which scene was your favorite?

The story of her growing up in an alcohol home, this is so true for many people. I think a lot of moms can relate.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The author said something about your children turning into adults and as parents we are not responsible for their bad decisions also the bad decisions of your parents are not your fault. .

Any additional comments?

This book hit home for me, as I think it will will for all women. We are all living the Beauty of Broken.

great book!

Real life stories from a real person and how God continues to work out his will in all our lives. This book is encouraging and full of truth, I only wish I had the paper copy to go back to and underline and reread.

Loved the narrator.
She opened my eyes to things and to things I never thought of with the people who interweave into my life.

reminder that we're all broken and that's the plan

Honest, vulnerable and the reminder I needed as a mom trying to follow Christ. I'm not perfect, my past is not perfect, nor my present...so why do I think the future would be different? Broken is beautiful.

Heartfelt story about how God loves the broken!

Real, heartfelt, relatable story. Wonderful reminder of how everything we struggle with and go through in life shapes us into better people, into who we become. God loves us too much to leave us how we were before.
