Publisher's Summary

My business was now continually augmenting, and my circumstances growing daily easier, my newspaper having become very profitable, as being for a time almost the only one in this and the neighbouring provinces. I experienced, too, the truth of the observation, "that after getting the first hundred pound, it is more easy to get the second", money itself being of a prolific nature.

The partnership at Carolina having succeeded, I was encourag'd to engage in others, and to promote several of my workmen, who had behaved well, by establishing them with printing-houses in different colonies, on the same terms with that in Carolina. Most of them did well, being enabled at the end of our term, six years, to purchase the types of me and go on working for themselves, by which means several families were raised. Partnerships often finish in quarrels; but I was happy in this, that mine were all carried on and ended amicably, owing, I think, a good deal to the precaution of having very explicitly settled, in our articles, every thing to be done by or expected from each partner, so that there was nothing to dispute.

    "The Greatest American"

Benjamin Franklin is my kind of guy, he is a renowned polymath. Not just a scientist, not just a politician, not just an entrepreneur, he is all of these things and more. Probably the best autobiography I've ever read. He is obviously extremely accomplished, but in many ways more importantly, he lived an interesting life and writes about it very well. His stories are not only super entertaining, but are filled with timeless wisdom. This version is excellent, I preferred this narrator to the others and he does an excellent job.

    "Wonderful Autobiography and Great Narration"

This book is almost like a time machine insofar as the construction of his sentences and the words he uses are clearly from a very early America. At times he uses euphemisms and metaphors that we wouldn't commonly use or understand today. Franklin really gives you a sense of the time as he describes scenery, print shops, modes of transportation, difficulties of communication and travelling relatively short distances, etc. I like to imagine sometimes when I'm driving down the freeway just how difficult it was traversing the exact same terrain back in the 1700s.

Franklin is all over the place in this book. He seems to skip large chunks of time and misses events only to come back to them later. However, this is a brilliant look at his development as a young man and gives details of how and what influenced him in his youth. As one of the most influential people of early American history, this book serves to give the reader a better understanding of the men responsible for creating the nation we all enjoy today.

The narration was done exceptionally well. Kevin kept up a good pace, but not so fast that you would have a hard time following.

All in all, this was a very good book. I think the narrated version will be preferable to most people. It brings the book to life in a way that just reading it surely wouldn't accomplish for most people, specifically because of the slight accent and pronunciation of his words.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

    "Well worth a listen!"

Good old Ben! A great listen. Makes me think we have lost the art of eloquent writing.

    "Oh Benjamin..."
If you could sum up The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin in three words, what would they be?

Fascinating. Educational. Incomplete. This book is not a full autobiography of his life. The narrative ends before his Revolutionary War activity cranks up. Still great though. Although, I feel all autobiographies should be read with the understanding that the writer is not going to be telling everything so best to follow with a biography that might fill in the gaps...

What did you like best about this story?

It was great to hear Benjamin Franklin's story told through his own eyes... Some of the greatest moments in his early life are just glossed over in a sentence or two. One got the feeling he liked talking about himself, but not really. Or rather, he wanted to make sure some of his famous experiments and administration efforts don't go unnoticed while not wanting to appear as a braggart.

Have you listened to any of Kevin Theis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to other performances by Kevin Theis. While they are all good, this may be one of his better ones as his voice makes you feel as if you are listening to Benjamin Franklin speak to you. His voice has a quality that is great for reading classics and semi-classics such as this one.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No laughing or crying, but many a-ha moments. There were moments when I was surprised by how some of the more famous moments in his life came about.

    Any additional comments?

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
