Publisher's Summary

On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry.

Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war. That Lincoln succeeded was the result of a character that had been forged by life experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. He won because hepossessed an extraordinary ability to put himself in the place of other men, to experience what they were feeling, to understand their motives and desires.

This capacity enabled President Lincoln to bring his disgruntled opponents together, create the most unusual cabinet in history, and marshal their talents to preserve the Union and win the war.

"Goodwin's narrative abilities...are on full display here, and she does an enthralling job of dramatizing...crucial moments in Lincoln's life....A portrait of Lincoln as a virtuosic politician and managerial genius." (Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times)

"Splendid, beautifully written....Goodwin has brilliantly woven scores of contemporary accounts...into a fluid narrative....This is the most richly detailed account of the Civil War presidency to appear in many years." (John Rhodehamel, Los Angeles Times)

"Amazing story, not my favorite narration."

This book was excellent. I have a much deeper appreciation for the great man that Lincoln was, and new respect for those who surrounded him. The only issue I have with this book is the narration, which was painfully slow. I had to up the pace to make it not so mind numbingly relaxing that it put me half to sleep.

    "Fabulous Book"

I knew that Lincoln was revered as one of our greatest Presidents but after hearing this story, he may very well be the greatest of them all. In such a trying time, he was exactly what our young nation had to have.

"Every American must read this book"

There are few amongst us who would not place Abraham Lincoln near, or at, the top of their list of greatest human beings to ever walk the face of the earth. It difficult to believe one man could possess such qualities. Industry, strength, philosophical reasoning, logic, understanding, compassion. If you want to learn how to be a better person, read this book. In addition, this book is a fantastic look inside the day to day life of an American president. The internal tensions, debates, and political maneuverings are laid out in great and fascinating detail. In the end this book will help you understand what it truly means to be an American.

"Read this book. Then read it again. And again."

This was a remarkable work on one of the most remarkable men who ever lived. This book was very powerful and very moving. I really felt like I was there with Lincoln throughout this narration. The reading was perfectly paced, clear and very well done. I almost feel like starting the biography over again immediately after finishing it.
