Publisher's summary

Join Greg Laurie as he takes a cross-country drive in his 1968 Highland Green Ford Mustang 390 GT through the canyons of Malibu, the alleys of Hollywood, the wide and open roads of the Midwest, the streets of New York, as he traces the wooly geography of actor Steve McQueen's life, relationships, career, and spiritual journey. This iconic muscle car was the vehicle McQueen drove in his most raucous and enduring film, Bullitt. In the 1960s, McQueen was, according to box office receipts, the biggest movie star of his generation and one of the coolest men to ever walk the planet. Greg Laurie was a teen at the time and an ardent fan of ''The King of Cool", first mesmerized by McQueen in 1963's The Great Escape. Like millions of cinema fans, Greg developed a lifelong fascination with the actor. Now he has a chance to tell McQueen's story.

McQueen was a complex, contradictory man who lived the same way he drove his motorcycles and cars: fearlessly, ruthlessly, and at top speed. After a lifetime of fast cars, women, and drugs, McQueen took a surprising detour. In this book, Laurie thoughtfully interviews members of Steve McQueen's family, friends, co-stars, associates, widow, and pastor to tell of the dramatic life change for the actor in the spring of 1979 - six months before McQueen was diagnosed with terminal cancer. What were the critical steps that led McQueen to make such a life-altering decision? Perhaps more importantly, why is that part of his story so rarely told? This book answers these questions.

Greg Laurie will follow the seeds of Christianity that were sown throughout McQueen's improbable life where a Light finally shone into the darkness of his troubled life. These seeds miraculously germinated, allowing McQueen to see that redemption through Jesus Christ is a lasting truth more glittering and real than any magic of the entertainment industry.

Fascinating

Listened to the book, which was wonderful; and also went to see the author's movie. Great experience. What was so particularly fascinating was that they brought out scenes that showed how McQueen's skill in using the camera to his advantage with his three best movies. So, I just bought those 3 movies to watch them again with a new perspective and appreciation.

Too much Laurie, not enough McQueen

Too much religion and is more about the author than Steve McQueen. Not what I expected and can't return it. Thanks for nothing.

The end/beginning of the story

Great book! I’d always heard Steve McQueen confessed Christ before he died but this book fills in so much detail. Greg Laurie did an excellent job.

Intresting bio of Steve McQueen

Interesting story that was intertwined the author's life with Steve McQueen's that l hadn't expected. The way the author conducted the research that was done relating the process of Steve's conversion grabbed my attention. Other than McQueen's acting on Wanted Dead or Alive, l only saw a couple of movies that he starred in so l can't say l was a fan of his, but l did find his story interesting and "read" this book in just 2 sittings.

Moving story and easy to listen to at 1.5x speed!

I loved it. his faith journey was legit.

The image of Mcqueen clutching the bible Billy Graham gave him will stay with me.

See you in heaven Steve!

Amazing story. I have been a Steve McQueen fan for many years. I knew of his faith in Jesus but I had no idea the level of change that took place in his life in such a short amount of time. What a transformation! This was a good listen. I will recommend this to some of my fellow Magnificent Seven fans.

Really Great Story

I did not expect the story to have the depth of character in Steve McQueen. Thoroughly enjoyed the book and the message.

A Book About Religion & Author

Don’t be fooled. This is a book about the author and conversion to being a born again Christian. Laurie loves talking about himself and spends much of it talking about himself. I listened to learn more about Steve McQueen and learned more about Laurie and his church. I don’t know if I can get through it. Almost all of the 5 star reviews are from Christians. I’d look elsewhere if you really want to learn about McQueen instead of having Christ shoved down your thought. What a disappointment. It’s the worst book I’ve listened to on Audible. I don’t even want to hear the narrator ever again.

More Sermon than Biography

Struggled to get through this book, McQueen is a long time favorite of mine. If the author had spent more time on the life of Steven McQueen instead of the relentless drawing of parallels of his own life story and that of his subject it would have been a much more interesting book and probably only half as long.
