Publisher's Summary

Born in 1970s North Korea, Lucia Jang grew up in a typical household - her parents worked in the factories, and the family scraped by on rations. Nightly she bowed to her photo of Kim Il-Sung. It was the beginning of a chaotic period with a decade-long famine.

Jang married an abusive man who sold their baby. She left him and went home to help her family by illegally crossing the river to China to trade goods. She was caught and imprisoned twice. After giving birth to a second child, which the government ordered to be killed, she escaped with him, fleeing under gunfire across the Chinese border. This demonstration of love and courage reflects the range of experiences many North Korean women have endured.

    "Fantastic story. Well read."

I have now read 4 books about North Korean Refugees. While this is not my favorite, it is definitely near the top (Yeonmi Park's book is by far the best imo).

The reading is clear and very easily understood. The story itself will keep you so interested you won't want to stop listening. Give this book a chance and you will not regret it.

Janet Song did a wonderful job narrating this story. The woman's unfortunate history in North Korea was incredibly very interesting and sad to listen to.

    "Good story"

I've been plowing through all the North Korean content they have on audible and this book is a worthy addition once you get past the first few chapters. If you've read other defectors books you'll hear a lot of familiar things, but her travels and her escape actually go a different route than usual.

For the bad... the book is way to flowery at the beginning, it's written like a love novel written by a teenage girl. Also a lot of the dialogue in the book comes off as completely unbelievable along with the wording used. I think this is the fault of the english author who is trying to pump everything up in terms of language used (not the story but the language) and is doing a bad impression of an American indian. I've heard a lot of North Korean defectors talk and none that I've heard talk like it's 1800 America "and the sun and moon dance in sky with blanket pricked with light by the gods showing through...". That's thankfully not an actual example, but it gives you an idea of how the book comes off at times, however as the book moves into the later chapters the writing gets more serious and the book gets dramatically more interesting.

The reader of the book does a good job, is professional. 4 out of 5 isn't bad in my book, it's not not elite, which I think is fair as the content of the book doesn't really allow for an elite performance.

Overall this is worth adding to any collection of North Korean books, but because of the flowery writing maybe save it for the end of that collection as opposed to the beginning.

    "heart-wretching story"

I loved the story although parts were heartbreaking. It was interesting to see her side of the story and picture in my mind as I listened to this book. everyone should read it to get an idea of what North Korea is like and what it's people are going through.
