Publisher's Summary

In this evocative and gorgeously wrought memoir reminiscent of Rob Sheffield's Love Is a Mixtape and George Hodgman's Bettyville, Michael Ausiello - a respected TV columnist and founder and editor in chief of TVLine.com - remembers his late husband and the lessons, love, and laughter that they shared throughout their 14 years together.

For the past decade, TV fans of all stripes have counted upon Michael Ausiello's insider knowledge to get the scoop on their favorite shows and stars. From his time at Soaps in Depth to his influential stints at TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly to his current role as founder and editor in chief of the wildly popular website TVLine.com, Michael has established himself as the go-to expert when it comes to our most popular form of entertainment.

What many of his fans don't know, however, is that while his professional life was in full swing, Michael had to endure the greatest of personal tragedies: His husband, Kit Cowan, was diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive form of neuroendocrine cancer. Over the course of 11 months, Kit and Michael did their best to combat the deadly disease, but Kit succumbed to his illness in February 2015.

In this heartbreaking and darkly hilarious memoir, Michael tells the story of his harrowing and challenging last year with Kit while revisiting the 13 years that preceded it and how the undeniably powerful bond between him and Kit carried them through all manner of difficulty - always with laughter front and center in their relationship. Instead of a tale of sadness and loss, Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies is an unforgettable, inspiring, and beautiful testament to the resilience and strength of true love.

Gritty heartbreaking story of love and grief.

I enjoyed the raw honesty of author. Story narrated by author. You can hear that power of his emotion through his speech.

One of the best love stories

Real. Gut wrenching. Funny. Sad. I felt like I was right there with Mike and Kit as their love story unfolded and then heartbreakingly ended. Seriously one of the best books I have ever listened to.

Heartfelt story, could've been better narrated

despite being the one writing and living this heartfelt, tearful, and often witty story, the author's delivery was too often flat and lacked the emotion being conveyed. The story was wonderful, touching my heart, making me laugh and cry, could have been better with a more emotional delivery.

Outstanding story and narration!

I would recommend this book to everyone regardless of their sexual persuasion. It is written so beautifully and honestly that I felt like I was shopping, traveling, eating, and helping right along with them. I hated to have to get out of my car and stop listening. Even knowing the ending made it much more enjoyable to learn how they got to the end of their journey. I laughed and cried throughout the book. You will not regret buying this book. Oh, and I'm straight. LOVE THIS STORY!!!!! A movie could not do it justice.

You'll laugh, you'll cry

I have been reading Michael Ausiello's column for years. I have always enjoyed his "voice" in his columns and was moved when he shared the news of Kit's passing to the TVline.com readers. When I discovered he had written a book about the experience, I was anxious to listen. I LOVED this book. It was funny and snarky and real. Their love story is so honest and relate-able (regardless of your sexual orientation) - love is love.

Amazing book. Best of the year

THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING.
I listened to it via audible and it'ys the best book of the year so far for me. Stunning, lovely, emotional, important and funny. I love the way this shows the depth of love and a gay couple that defies stereotypes. I am inspired by this couple and their story and so grateful to Michael Aussiello for sharing it.
Please read this. Especially if you are LGBT.

Heartbreaking, life-affirming, extremely honest

First off a public health warning - avoid listening to this audiobook while driving. Tear-filled eyes can cause accidents.

Perhaps surprisingly for a book about a one year battle with a horrific and rare cancer, and for which the title lets you know there’s no miraculous recovery, this is a very uplifting book.

The author is unflinchingly honest throughout. Not just about the impact of the disease itself, but about his whole relationship with his husband, the hero of the title. This is a story about a whole relationship, not just an 11-month cancer battle, and it’s exceedingly well told.

Highly recommended listen.
