Publisher's summary

The story that became a global sensation: Sophie, the Australian cattle dog who was lost at sea and swam six miles through shark-infested waters to a remote island where she survived in the wild for five months.

It was just another day in paradise as Jan and Dave Griffith, along with their blue cattle dog, Sophie, motored out of Mackay Marina for a gorgeous weekend at sea. But when the sky suddenly darkened and the waves turned fierce, the unthinkable happened: Sophie disappeared overboard. Her heartbroken humans couldn’t fathom the loss and could only hope their beloved pet didn’t suffer. But this true cattle dog and devoted best friend wasn’t going to give up that easily - and what followed is a remarkable tale of survival, luck, and persistence.

From the first day the Griffiths set eyes on puppy Sophie through that terrible October day she was lost, to Sophie’s time as a castaway and the reunion that almost didn’t happen, journalist Emma Pearse recreates the incredible journey of this canine Robinson Crusoe. An inspirational story of loyalty and the resilience of the spirit, Sophie offers undeniable proof about the unbreakable bond between humans and our pets - and that if lost, they would do anything to come home to us.

Sophie the Robinson Crusoe Dog

Enjoyed Anna-Lisa Horton's slight accent. This is a true story of an Australian Cattle dog named Sophie. The story takes place with a family and their dog in Queensland, Aus. Sophie goes out on the boat with them and in rough sea goes overboard. She apparently swan 6 miles to an Island and then at least once or more times swam to another island until landing on one with fresh water and wild goats. She survived for 5 months. The story cover her life as a pet and then the rescue of her by the park rangers. I usually avoid most animal stories as the endings are sad but this book has a happy ending and was not particularly sad at any time during the story. The fact that it is a true story adds to it. This book makes a nice change of pace if you are looking for a break from more complex reading. The kids would like this book also.

An Amazing Story of Courage and Luck

Sophie is the story of a remarkable dog's survival despite enormous odds. It wasn't just the challenges she overcame, but the amazing chance that reunited her with her family. If this was fiction, the plot might be said to be predictable. This however was real life and the outcome for Sophie and her family was anything but predictable. You could say it was miraculous.

Four stars because

With me, Every dog story starts with Four Stars…and having owned a Blue Heeler I consider my “heart dog” I thought this would be a five star listen. Sadly, not so… I can’t blame the author… There’s no way to fill in the gap from Sophie going overboard to rescue without lots of filler and the most speculative perceptions… Nonetheless, the story is just a little bit tedious.

Dog Overboard!

I give the writing a 3, as I felt certain parts could have been shorter, some could have been longer, and there were parts that seemed to drag; however, I give Sophie a 5 - therefore, my rating averages out to a 4. Sophie's story is amazing, and she demonstrated such a sense of loyalty to her family!! She refused human companionship during her ordeal as if she was waiting for her own family to find her, which is so heartwarming. I think the eventual reunion between family and dog could have been lengthened and been written in a more dramatic and emotional manner; that would have strengthened the book considerably. I cannot even imagine what her family must have gone through, thinking that they lost her through not keeping a close eye on her. And Sophie's terror at finding herself overboard is beyond imaginable.

I was surprised that I never heard about this story when it happened. I usually see these kinds of stories on the internet and make sure I read them. This one somehow passed me by.

I listened to this on audio, and I am glad that I did. I'm not sure I would have liked the printed version as much, particularly given the reviews of the poor editing of the printed pages. I didn't get that in the audio, so either they fixed it or the narrator fixed it as she went along
