Publisher's Summary

In his follow-up to the best-selling Ultra-Marathon Man, world-renowned ultra marathoner Dean Karnazes chronicles his unbelievable exploits and explorations in gripping detail; Karnazes runs for days on end without rest, across some of the most exotic and inhospitable places on earth, including the Australian Outback, Antarctica, and the back alleys of New Jersey.

From the downright hilarious to the truly profound, the stories in Run! provide listeners with the ultimate escape and offer a rare glimpse into the mindset and motivation of an extreme athlete, one who has, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer, "Not only pushed the envelope but blasted it to bits."

Karnazes addresses pain and perseverance, and he also charts the emotional as he pushes to the edges of human achievement. The tales of the friendships he’s cultivated on his many adventures around the world warm the heart, and are sure to captivate and inspire readers whether they run great distances, modest distances, or not at all.

    "Great stories. Horrible narrator."

Inspiring stories of endurance and perseverance. The narrator was very robotic and difficult to listen to at times. Listening required a level of my own endurance.

"Dean Seems to Have Run Out of Stories"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

You would need to be a pretty big fan of Dean's to enjoy this one. I'm not a fan, nor am I a hater, I just think he keeps putting out books even when he's already said it all. TWO detailed stories of being in a convenience store? Really?
It should be mentioned that I'm an ultra-runner, which is why I chose this, and I was still pretty darn bored.

What could Dean Karnazes have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Tried to keep in mind that just because it happened to HIM, that still doesn't always equal an interesting story.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Well narrated, and I'm pretty picky about narration, so that's high praise.

    Any additional comments?

I did enjoy the Badwater chapter, so it's not all negative :)

    "Disappointing"
    Any additional comments?

I ordered this after listening to "Road to Sparta," an absolutely wonderful book, and my first Dean Karnazes book. I think what I found in "Road to Sparta" was someone who is really growing as an author -- who realizes that the story has to be about more than, well, the author. There was enough Dean in Sparta to make it personal, and enough history to make it universal. I was really looking forward to reading/hearing more. And I'm still going to buy "Ultramarathon Man." But "Run" read like someone who had run out of things to say, but still had a book contract to fulfill. It is 26.2 chapters of homage to Dean, and when he runs out of things to say about himself, he recruits his wife to write a chapter about him, then he has a friend write a chapter about him, then he interviews their kids about what he's like as a dad. Then there's a chapter of "Dean, you're great" letters from fans.

And this all seems odd ... because he doesn't come across as some raging egotist. He sounds like a nice guy, who has run out of things to say. That's really understandable ... and I think came to see that he needed to reach beyond himself to write Sparta.

So, oddly, while I didn't like this book, I'm looking forward to "Ultramarathon Man" and to whatever he writes next.

    "More of the same"

The narration was very good. But the 26.2 stories seem to be more of the same from Dean's first book.

"Compelling and funny stories read by a robot"

Narration was way stiff. Very professional and a nice voice, but it did not fit the book.

Overall a nice listen, but probably a better read.
