Publisher's Summary

Most people know Penny Marshall as the director of Big and A League of Their Own. What they don’t know is her trailblazing career was a happy accident. In this funny and intimate memoir, Penny takes us from the stage of The Jackie Gleason Show in 1955 to Hollywood’s star-studded sets, offering up some hilarious detours along the way.

My Mother Was Nuts is an intimate backstage pass to Penny’s personal life, her breakout role on The Odd Couple, her exploits with Cindy Williams and John Belushi, and her travels across Europe with Art Garfunkel on the back of a motorcycle. We see Penny get married. And divorced. And married again (the second time to Rob Reiner). We meet a young Carrie Fisher, whose close friendship with Penny has spanned decades. And we see Penny at work with Tom Hanks, Mark Wahlberg, Whoopi Goldberg, Robert De Niro, and Whitney Houston.

Throughout it all, from her childhood spent tap dancing in the Bronx, to her rise as the star of Laverne & Shirley, Penny lived by simple rules: “try hard, help your friends, don’t get too crazy, and have fun.” With humor and heart, My Mother Was Nuts reveals there’s no one else quite like Penny Marshall.

"Great book but just a little too much language for me!"

This is my second memoir this year and I really enjoyed it.

My only complaint is the language, especially in the second half of the book which seems to have had more than the first half. I took off one star for that.

I loved hearing about the life and career of one of my favorite actresses and directors. I did have some trouble with her heavy accent in the beginning but I quickly adjusted to it.

    "5 more minutes"

I wish this book went on for 5 more minutes. I was born in Brooklyn in 1960 and wow could I relate to all Penny's fun memories growing up in a New York boro and the realness of a true New York. She is a great talent and lived an interesting life. This is a must read for anyone born from 1940s to 2000. I listened to the book with my 24 year old and she was laughing out loud. I must of said OMG I forgot about that , I played that too 50 times. Penny I need just 5 more minutes!

"This Is Why I Buy Autobiographies Read By Author!!"
Would you consider the audio edition of My Mother Was Nuts to be better than the print version?

I can say yes, even though I have never read the print version, because the joys and sorrows that come through epitomize why I buy books read by the author. When Penny Marshall cries while discussing the death of her mom, you cry with her, and experience a moment rarely experienced with an author. This goes for all of the ups and downs of her life. You really get the feelings she intended by hearing her read it to you.

What was one of the most memorable moments of My Mother Was Nuts?

When Penny shares with you the loss of her mother. Also, any time she feels something is a crock of "sh*t" and other expletives that she pulls off perfectly.

What does Penny Marshall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her emotion. You are having a one sided conversation by having her read it to you.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did cry a couple times, and that is rare for me when listening to a book. This book is special, because Ms. Marshall is special and shares her story in her voice.

    Any additional comments?

    Love, Love, Love this book!!!!

"You'll laugh and know Penny Marshall"

It is refreshing to listen to a person's life story, who is comfortable in her own skin. At times, there is a feeling that Penny Marshall is visiting with you, like a friend you haven't seen for awhile and you bumped into on the street. Her humorous, generous and easy going personality reflect her appreciation for the relationships in her life.
