Leftovers, Maybe?

My sense was that the stories he tells were left over from My Lucky Life, not quite good enough and perhaps too self-indulgent to be included in the longer biography. I understand that he is, in fact, an old man, but his voice was difficult to listen to. He spent a lot of time justifying marriage to a woman half a century younger than him. But hey, Dick Van Dyke can do what he wants.

Good on the whole, but the chapter on grades was just weird

Dick Van Dyke does a great job narrating this book, and he's as funny and charming as you'd expect.

The book on the whole is good, but the chapter in which he grades various historical events during his lifetime was flat out stupid. He read only about half of The Great Gatsby, but rates the whole book an A. WTH? He didn't read Mein Kampf at all, but gives it an F simply because it was written by Hitler. Why not give Hitler himself an F and ignore Mein Kampf? The rest of the chapter is predictable: good/victorious moments in the USA's history get an A, and controversial/divisive moments get an F. Add to this the numerous factual errors he makes with dates and names (notably that James Cagney starred in Little Caesar instead of Edward G. Robinson. Who knew?), and this chapter is better off skipped.

Still, the book on the whole is good.
