Publisher's summary

John Henry Newton (1725 - 1807) was an Englishman, Anglican clergyman, and a former slave-ship captain. He was the author of many hymns, including "Amazing Grace". Here is a fascinating, colorful, and historically significant portrait of the slave-trader-turned-Christ-follower.

Critic reviews

"Only God could take a vile slave trader and turn him into a useful instrument in abolishing the slave trade and igniting a gospel revival, the flames of which are burning still. The story of Newton's life inspires all who seek to follow the path of Jesus today." (Timothy George, Executive Editor, Christianity Today)

He, a great dinner - Jesus, the great savior

Wonderful story. Inspirational evidence of the Lord Jesus' perfect grace.
Reading is good enough. Production value is lacking.

Good introduction to a great saint.

Newton's larger than life story is told in an entertaining and instructional way in this book. I could have done without the annoying chapter introductions, but all else was supurb!

The Most Amazing Grace

John Newton's story is one of unbelievable happenings. From the slave trade to life on the sea, and to the ministry, the twists and turns read like those only imagined. But there are few other stories that compare in demonstrating completely God's amazing and forgiving GRACE through the blood of Jesus Christ. Anyone can become a new creation. There is no one who is too far on this side of eternity. Thank you Jonathan Aitken for bringing this biography to life. And this book is also expertly narrated by the author.

Very insightful and inspiring!

The author did an awesome job of picking out the most important parts of Newton's life. The book moves in a well thought out pace. It really makes you stop and think along the way of how important God was to his life. Plus I never really understood the depths of his sin before. Newton was a godly example of a husband, pastor and servant of the Lord! The reading is also well done. I will go through this book again next year, it is that good!

A masterful work on an inspirational role-model

Where does John Newton rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is one of the finest that I have heard.

What other book might you compare John Newton to and why?

It has the depth of Jonathan Edwards by Marsden, but the intrigue of the story of the Apostle Paul in the book of Acts.

Which character – as performed by Jonathan Aitken – was your favorite?

Obviously, John Newton.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, if possible, but being such a long book, it was not possible.

Any additional comments?

This book is an inspiration to a young clergyman - Newton's life could serve as a godly pattern for any servant of the Lord wanting to make a difference in other individual's lives as well as in the world.
