Publisher's Summary

The aim of this volume is to set down a few recollections connected with various periods of my life. It is equally intended for those interested in my music and in myself. Rather, therefore, than a biography it will be a simple account of important events side by side with facts of minor consequence: both, however, have a certain significance for me, and I wish to relate them according to the dictates of my memory. Naturally I shall not be able to keep within the bounds of bare statement. As I call my recollections to mind, I shall necessarily be obliged to speak of my opinions, my tastes, my preferences, and my abhorrences.

    "Fascinating"

This is a must get audio book for the classical music lover. The insight of the inner workings that led to his music are treasures for those that love his music. The narrator has a beautiful musical tone to his voice that really lends itself to this story. Highly recommend!

    "not what i was expecting"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Not unless they were a more classical music fan

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I don't know, some of it i would have liked a little more detail, i got a little bored and my mind quit listening putting it as background noise so i had to replay some parts just so i didn't miss anything.

What about Arthur Grey’s performance did you like?

I thought he did a good job. there were parts where it felt his voice was just droning on but that might be because there wasn't enough details to keep my mind involved like it should be.

Do you think An Autobiography needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No, i don't think so... unless it has more details about what his life was like, then i might be interested.

    Any additional comments?

"Better if you know who the people are"

When selecting this book I did so have a passing knowledge of Stravinsky, particularly his earlier work and the controversy around Rites of Spring. I picked this up hoping to learn more and get a better appreciation of his work. And to an extent this book does provide it.

The book is a great insight into his thoughts on music, his influences and the people he worked with, as well as some of the thoughts and ideas of the time. He often refers to contemporary composers or choreographers or dancers, and while many of these names are not known to me what he was saying was not lost. He gives enough context of who they are that his impressions and thoughts about them have some resonance. It is through these comments (where he explains why he doesn't like person X work, or does like) it that you learn about him. It would be better to know about the people he is speaking about, but not all is lost if you don't.

As he is a russian who lived through 1917 (and WW1 in general) I would have hoped for more discussion on that and his thoughts. He talks a little of "the old regime" and "the new regime" but really only in relation to what it mean for them putting on his shows. He briefly mentions that he lost some stuff in 1917 as he was out of the country, but the impact isn't overly explored.

Some of the things considered important now, in retrospect, such as the Rite of Spring, are passed over fairly quickly without discussion of the controversy or the impact.

The autobiography is interesting and lets you into his mind to know him a little, but if you want to know about him then maybe a different book would be better.

Narration by Arthur Grey is good. Clear and easy to follow, well paced. He wraps his tongue around the french and russian items sprinkled throughout the book well. Worked well for the non-fiction nature of the book.
