Publisher's Summary

Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash”. At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age - and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime.

Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns about love for herself and the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.

Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a modern American classic that will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read - or listen.

What the Critics Say

"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.” (James Baldwin)

“A beautiful book - an unconditionally involving memoir for our time or any time.... Maya Angelou is a natural writer with an inordinate sense of life and she has written an exceptional autobiographical narrative.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Simultaneously touching and comic.” (The New York Times)

Ms. Angelou's writing is, of course, A MAYa ZING throughout the book! But, I was actually surprised at the inconsistency of her narrating. Her voice is stunning in many of the critical passages. Her performance is spot-on when it needs to be. But, in between, I was surprised at how the narration came across as less-than-prepared. During passages that just keep the story moving along, it sounded like she was reading and not narrating. I still recommend this book.

    "A classic."

I don't feel that I have to explain why Maya Angelou's writing is so great, or that I even can. I can only add that her personal reading of her life events, fears, joys, and discoveries of self are twice as punchy and intense when heard in her voice. It takes some adjustments because she is calm and slow speaking but after an hour it's hard to imagine the reading any other way. My only saddness is that the book leaves off young in her life and I was gasping at the end, desperate to know more.

I thought the book was insightful, open, and honest. When I finished listening to the book, I found myself wanting more. The characters are alive; I felt as if I knew them, and understood them.

Beautiful... always precious to be able to briefly experience the world through someone else's eyes, and to find those moments of human connection in our sameness...

I loved this book. It's a true depiction of what happened back on the day. Grandmothers rising to the occasion, uncles, brothers and the men that were createdare to protect us causing more harm than good. Awesome story.

Wonderful presentation, as well as an awesome grammatical interpretation by the reader and the presenter. This book took me back to yesteryear with it's references two ancient parts of a train as well as words we used to use and situational phrases.
