Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Finalist, Biography/Memoir, 2014

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.

Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.

I am Malala will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

What the Critics Say

"Narrator Archie Panjabi is an excellent choice to deliver this memoir of the Pakistani girl who stood up to the Taliban. Her voice is youthful, lilting, and buoyant, invoking the key qualities of the now well-known young woman who, at the age of 15, was shot three times in the face by the Taliban because she actively advocated education for girls. Panjabi narrates with vigor; rapid sentences and warm tones evoke Malala's persona. The listener has the feeling of being told this story by Malala herself rather than by an actor, which is the best type of audiobook. Those who want to hear more about Afghanistan, Pakistan's Swat Valley, or the family behind this courageous young person will not be disappointed." (AudioFile)

    "Providing Equality"

The memoir tells how Malala struggled to stand up for the education of girls and also for the higher education of these girls as they became women. She wanted equality for both sexes. The book did tell of her hardships and victories. However, I found it dull and repetitious. The narrator was at times difficult to decipher but was okay. The memoir may be written for a younger listener than myself. Malala's memoir is a truth others need to realize. They need to understand how the leaders of her country are enforcing these restrictions against her people.

My favorite part of the Audible book is getting to hear her voice in the beginning. I am humbled by her story and she made me understand that learning is a privilege I have taken for granted all my life. She is an amazing young lady.

"Much better than reading the book. "

This is a great story. The reading would have been difficult as the pronunciations would have distracted me. It was great to hear the story with a Pakistani voice, adding to the authenticity.

"inspiring account of a courageous girl"

great performance of Malala's story. her family life, her campaign for the education of girls, and the events that led up to and followed her shooting by the Taliban. my only hesitation about the account is that I did not fully understand the events that gave her such prominence and led her to become a target of the Taliban.

    "An amazing child!"

I so enjoyed this story. It was so innocent and yet it showed such wisdom for her age. She is a great example of what education can do for girls and boys. If only the boys schools were shown such compassion and joy in life.
