Publisher's Summary

When Harriet Tubman was born a plantation slave in 1820, her parents hoped she could learn a trade, so she wouldn't have to work in the fields. But because she defended a slave against an overseer, she became a field hand anyway. As she grew strong and learned to survive in the woods and find her way by the North Star, she dreamed of freedom. When she was almost 30, she finally made her escape, but her own freedom wasn't enough. Risking life and limb, she became a conductor on the Underground Railroad to help other slaves flee to safety. A symbol of strength and hope, this legendary "Moses" led over 300 of her people to freedom and a new life.

Narrator Peter Francis James brings this powerful woman to life to inspire all of us with her compassion, bravery and moral integrity.

An Incredible human being

I have always heard about the "Underground Railroad" but never really took the time to understand it's history. This book is every good place to start. There should be a "Harriet Tubman" Day. She was as important to the freeing the slaves and the civil rights movement as Lincoln and Martin Luther King, I researched in hopes to find a movie about her. I could not find any. Harriet story would make a WONDERFUL movie. If done correctly it could walk away with all the Oscars. This is a must read book! The performance of the book was good, but as with most of the Audible books, I had tp change the speed to 1 1/2x from 1x

The story of Harriet Tubman comes alive in this historical novel. You will experience live as a slave on a Maryland plantation and before you know it you are along for the ride on the infamous Underground Railroad.

IMPORTANT HISORICALLY

Where does Harriet Tubman rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

For knowledge and information Harriet Tubman ranks in the top 10%.

What did you like best about this story?

It helped me view things from a different perspective. Being a white man I don't really consider race at all. I have friends and neighbors who are black but learning about slavery from the perspective of Harriet Tubman helps me empathize with her. I truly gained an affinity for this truly great woman who I believe was guided by God to do what she did.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was very interested to learn that she fell asleep without any apparent reason other than the injury she'd suffered. This must have been an incredibly dagerous experience and heightened the danger she was placed in.

Inspired

Harriet's story is jaw dropping. That someone can have the strength and care for others that she had puts us all to shame. Such a major historical figure but sadly not well known. The voice performance of the narrator is the best that I have encountered especially when he sings some of the old spiritual songs. Buy this book and you won't regret it.

Amazing story! A must-read for everybody!

This is truly one of the most inspirational stories I have ever read! Harriet Tubman was truly heaven-sent. I am motivated to be a better person because of her life. The narration was perfect. As I listened, I felt like I was traveling on the Underground Railroad with "Moses". I'm thankful for Harriet's sacrifice and am forever indebted to her. May our great ancestor live forever in our hearts!

Why?

Harriet Tubman was, without doubt, the bravest woman of the 19th century.

Why has no modern movie been made?

Audiobook for Harriet Tubman is not that great...

What would have made Harriet Tubman better?

Dear Audible Employees, Owner, and Staff,

It would be so much easier for me, and hopefully, many others, if you guys made the sections by chapters. I am in Section 5 of this book and it starts with Chapter 13! It's not even a multiple of 5! I would also propose making the skipping easier and faster. I was in Section 4 yesterday and I couldn't find Chapter 10! It drove me NUTS! Anyway, I would definitely appreciate if you make these fixes and I know a ton of people would enjoy it a little more!!!!! :) :) :)

Would you be willing to try another one of Peter Francis James’s performances?

NO! He is so slow! I do not want to offend anyone, personally Peter Francis James. He took 10 MINUTES TO READ 4 sentences!!!!!!! NO WONDER THIS THING IS 6 HOURS LONG!!!!!!!!!!

"Who Was" Book was better

I thought the book was fine. In all honesty I only got this book because I had to read it for school. I had already read the "Who was: Harriet Tuban" and preferred that better because it was more to the point and interesting. I felt this book had a lot of unneeded detail. But if you are someone who enjoys every specific details and are interested on the topic this book is for you.

Very Good Story

The story was very good. Although, the narrator has a great voice, the narration of this book is boring and drags along.

Fascinating story of a remarkable woman

I'm so glad I happened to be in the front seat of a taxi from Harlem to Central Park as it was the statue of Harriet Tubman that made her known to me. And now she's appearing on American bank notes, apparently. A truly courageous and selfless woman in a shameful period in human history.

Compelling and inspiring story

This is such an inspiring story and very well told. I was impressed with the way the great figure of Harriet Tubman was personalised and made more humane. Despite her own heartaches, always been there for others. Her tenacity and courage in the face of such overwhelming negative odds, she always manage to stay on course.
This book is written in an easy to read style, allowing the reader to feel the emotions, danger and adventures along with Harriet.
