Publisher's summary

A perfect blend of medical drama and spiritual insight, Gray Matter is a fascinating account of Dr. David Levy's decision to begin asking his patients if he could pray for them before surgery. Some are thrilled. Some are skeptical. Some are hostile, and some are quite literally transformed by the request.

Each chapter focuses on a specific case, opening with a detailed description of the patient's diagnosis and the procedure that will need to be performed, followed by the prayer request. From there, listeners follow as Dr. Levy performs the operation, and then we wait - right alongside Dr. Levy, the patients, and their families - to see the final results.

Dr. Levy's musings on what successful and unsuccessful surgical results imply about God, faith, and the power of prayer are honest and insightful. As we see him come to his ultimate conclusion that, no matter what the results of the procedure are, "God is good," we cannot help but be truly moved and inspired.

Amazing

I am so glad I came across this amazing Neurosurgeon’s story of how he came to a closer walk with our Lord and how it influenced his demeanor with his patients, many in life or death situations.

It encourages me to be more bold in praying for those I come across.

Thank you for writing this void Dr Levy.

Excellent narration yet Larry Wayne

What a courageous man!

This is a fabulous book. It takes us through Dr. David Levy’s journey of childhood faith to lack of faith to timid faith to courageous faith that risks ridicule and censure for the benefit of others. I found it very inspiring and is proof that a very intelligent man can have faith in God.

Don't give up...skip if you need to!

I almost gave up...I found the first 5 chapters dry. I understand why, but it could have been written alittle differently. The author wanted to carefully explain (analytically, as a doctor would) how he chose to pray with his patients. Without pressure, and with respect, he learned to ask permission to pray for them and he honored their wishes...whatever their answer. He also saw each person as an individual which is rare in the surgical profession. If you want to push past the slow start..go to chapter 5. You can always go back!
