Publisher's summary

In this memoir, the pseudonymous author, Ruthie Bolton, tells how she overcame tremendous obstacles to find her place in the world. Born into poverty in a rural Southern town, Bolton was abandoned by her 13-year-old mother and raised by her step-grandfather, an abusive tyrant who beat his wife to death and terrorized his children. With remarkable candor yet no trace of self-pity, Bolton describes how she used alcohol and drugs to try to escape her nightmarish existence. But her inner strength shined through, enabling her to clean up her act, finish school, begin a career, and find happiness in a new, loving family life.

Gal Ruthie Bolton

I enjoyed the realization of her life and the perseverance to endure the suffering and proceed to progress through it all.

Give it a rest!

The story was good and the details were moving but CCH Pounder was overly dramatic to the point it was sickening. She sounded like an overly ambitious second grader in a school production. They should have used another voice actor with a calmer demeanor.

Soul touching

As a social worker, I worked with many youths that did not have the will power to survive of end generational abuse. I appreciate Ruthie bravely talking about the abuse she suffered and how she survived. Enjoyed the book and the audio.

Best Book

Out of all of the audiobooks that I’ve listened to, this book is the best. It brought to mind a few people that I knew of years ago. I’m glad that the author was able to move forward and that her life had gotten better.

My heart!!! Breaks, mends, then melts all in one book.

I felt like my BFF was sitting next to me telling her story. Such a sad story, but love won in the end.

Great Preformance

This was a most horiffic story -I could not imagine the crulety and abuse they all suffered! And to know it was true was even more heartbreaking-how do you rate a story that involves such cruel acts! The grio was on point-her performance drew a vivid picture-one which I'll have a difficult time forgetting. I pray healing for the Survivors.
