Publisher's Summary

Kari Byron - former host of the wildly popular, iconic cult classic MythBusters - shows how to crash test your way through life, no lab coat required.

Kari Byron's story hasn't been a straight line. She started out as a broke artist living in San Francisco, writing poems on a crowded bus on the way to one of her three jobs. Many curveballs, unexpected twists, and yes, literal and figurative explosions later, and she's one of the world's most respected women in science entertainment, blowing stuff up on national television and getting paid for it!

In Crash Test Girl, Kari reveals her fascinating life story on the set of MythBusters and beyond. With her signature gusto and roll-up-your-sleeves enthusiasm, she invites listeners behind the duct tape and the dynamite, to the unlikely friendships and low-budget sets that turned a crazy idea into a famously inventive show with a rabid fanbase.

The truth is, Mythbusters was never meant to be a science show. But attaching a rocket to a car, riding a motorcycle on water, or lighting 500 pounds of coffee creamer on fire requires a decent understanding of chemistry, physics, and engineering.

Thus, the cast and crew brought in the scientific method to work through each problem: Question. Hypothesize. Analyze. Experiment. Conclude.

And as Kari came to learn in her own life, not only is the scientific method the best approach for busting myths, it's also the perfect tool for solving everyday issues, including:

  • Career
  • Love
  • Creativity
  • Setbacks
  • Money
  • Sexuality
  • Depression
  • Bravery

Crash Test Girl reminds us that science is for everyone, as long as you're willing to strap in, put on your safety goggles, hit a few walls, and learn from the results. Using a combination of methodical experimentation and unconventional creativity, you'll come to the most important conclusion of all: In life, sometimes you crash and burn, but you can always crash and learn.

Great book

This was a great book, and I love that it was read by Kari herself, it's like her sitting in your living room telling you her life story.

Fascinating and captivating

Loved the book.
The way Kari used different myths the process behind them to present different aspects of her life was great.
There was never a dull moment, and her presentation was full of nuance. My only complaint is that the book had to end.

Would definitely recommend buying this book.

Solid & Different, but still solid

Kari Byron.. What isn't there known about this woma? Artist, Mother, Former Mythbuster Cast Member, etc. Now you might think that this would be a "typical" autobiography, with stories of her youth (check), adventurous trips overseas during her college age youth (check), her time on Mythbusters (Double Check), Motherhood (yup), etc.. However, it definitely doesn't feel like a by the book life story. At times it feels like she's reading off of notes she has made for herself on sticky notes, at other times she gives you a feel good story from her life.. Thank You for that, and at others it's a nice little tidbit of info you weren't expecting, like her discussing her sexuality as a woman. All in all, its a good book, and I would like to think that some young woman might be inspired after reading/listening to this book

Love her! Loved the book!

Kari Byron was one of my favorite parts of Mythbusters. She was very relatable and seemed like someone you would have a beer with or go hiking! So I saw she wrote a book and of course I wanted to hear it! It was exactly what I expected and she has done some amazing things in and out of Mythbusters. Its a fun book, and makes you like her even more.

A Great Book For Young Women

I know that I am by far not the target audience for this book but I still enjoyed it. I was a huge Mythbusters fan and I did enjoy White Rabbit Project so when I saw that Kari was writing a book I had to have it.  When I saw that she was releasing an audiobook and narrating it herself I was even more excited.

Crash Test Girl gives life lessons from a woman who's "crash tested" her way through life's major and minor decisions. It is full of advice on how to be a strong and modern woman in these new times and how to stand up for yourself in both life and at work. Being a feminist I loved the advice that she is giving young women out there.

I did find a lot of her backstory interesting.  I didn't realize how little I knew about her until I got about 2 hours into this book.  She is a fascinating study in doing things her way and crashing into the right decision (or finding out its the wrong one and owning it).

I knew when I watched Mythbusters that Kari being part of the show was important, but as a male I wasn't sure just how important.  I'm glad that someone convinced her to write a book and I hope that teachers and parents are smart enough to let their students and daughters check this book out.  I think they'll enjoy it and learn to be stronger and more well-rounded women for it.

Fantastic

I was always a fan of Mythbusters, so when I heard Kari was writing a book I jumped to read it. My wife and I read this book together and it resonated with us. Kari’s attitude and outlook on life are refreshing and genuine. It felt like you were sitting next to her and having a conversation, than her just talking about life. My wife and I now have a better mindset going into our daily struggles with our kids. This is a great read.

I posted the following on my Facebook page!

I trained Apprentice Operating Engineers for over 20 years... we had LOTS of women and what the industry called "NON-TRADITIONAL" people for the trade. Operating Engineers operate all the construction equipment you see all over the Country. We also operate buildings and their systems. The Skilled Construction Trades have a NEED for the next generation of employees! But, if you don't want a 6 figure salary and the ability to retire with DIGNITY, then this employment opportunity isn't for you!!!

Most of you know I have LONG advocated for women and their opportunities in what has been considered NON-TRADITIONAL employment. Cari Byron has written this book and the inspiration contained within should be manifested in girls lives from the time they're born!

Do all women have to work in S.T.E.M. (or as Ms. Byron calls it, S.T.E.A.M. ...with the "A" meaning Arts)? That answer is No, but the motivation to succeed, especially in the face of adversity in this book is Positively worth the read!!!

Repeats a bit at the end - but otherwise good.

Repeats a bit over the last couple of chapters. Great to hear about behind the scenes at Mythbusters - amazing what they put up with.

Wonderful window into Kari Byron

The opening chapter comes across as forced and stilted. That is the-sum total of my dislike for this book.
The rest is a pleasure. It is good that Kari those to read this herself. Her voice adds a measure of honesty and truth to the narrative.

I hoped that this book would she'd some light on the abrupt exit of Kari, Grant and Tori. I was not disappointed.

I was scared that the #me-too connotations would shatter my love for the Myth Busters franchise.

Go ahead. Get this book, it is human.
