Publisher's summary

In 1992, nine-year-old Katie Beers was kidnapped by a family friend and locked in an underground box for 17 days. Katie has now come forward to tell the story that created a national media storm as reporters uncovered the truth about her prekidnapping life of neglect and sexual abuse and the details of her rescue. She shares how this experience and the recent death of her kidnapper, John Esposito, has affected her life. Despite the horrible reality of Katie's days of being chained in darkness, the kidnapping was, in fact, the climactic end of a tragic childhood and the beginning of a new life. Katie breaks her silence and reveals her inspiring healing process to the journalist who covered the story of the disappearance more than 20 years ago.

Buried Memories is the only source that includes the complete details of her traumatic childhood, transcriptions of recordings from Esposito, a firsthand account of how Katie felt after Esposito's death in 2013, and Katie's hopeful view of the future as she looks back into her dark past.

Simply Incredible

Would you listen to Buried Memories again? Why?

Maybe. It is an incredible book and I cannot give enough credit to the strength of Katie Beer, who opened up for this book to be possible. The only reason I say maybe is because it is hard to listen to someone treating a child like that.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Buried Memories?

Discovering that there were tapes of her screaming for help

What does Allyson Ryan and Eileen Stevens bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

They bring the story to life. With the different voices you get a very special insight to how each woman was feeling during the time in the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes. I cried. A couple times actually. Just from how this child was treated. I think it brings a lot to light about that side of our society that no one likes to talk about.

Any additional comments?

She deserves to be heard. So much courage for one girl. She deserves the upmost respect and I suggest this to anyone who comes across.

bad voices but epic struggle survival

story line: Katie is incredibly strong to endure and survive everything she went through. Katie's story is horrifying at moments, encouraging at others and tear-inducing at others. Katie, if you read this, you got moms all over the world who love you.

narration: the narrator is terrible. when she voices Katie's narrative in the tapes, she sounds bored af. the narrator for Katie herself was great. the other one is terrible. be prepared for the reporter's voice to throw you off.. but don't let it sway you away from Katie's story.

Harrowing Story

While I didn’t love the narrator, the story is still strong enough to keep you engaged. I don’t want to give away anything, but what a heartbreaking incident. My son is 9, and I often had a lot of trouble listening to many of the scenarios. Happy ending though, which is nice.

Thank You

Thank you Katie for having the courage to tell your story. I so want to hug and prorect little Katie Beers. My heart broke for you so many times through the reading of this book.
I am now so very happy for you to have been blessed with an amazing family... A beautiful husband and children. You deserve all of this and more. I am so very sorry for what all of those Despicable people took from you.
I really enjoyed the way this book was put together and the way the story was told through audible.

Amazing

The story was very breathtaking and raw! I didn't really like how it went everywhere around the middle, but I kept up. I hate that she went through that, but I'm glad she is better.

Not that Harvey W!

Amazing book, ignore the review that says they were boycotting because the author is a supporter of HW. The Harvey in this book was an old man with the unfortunate luck of being kidnapped and sharing his name with the awful HW.

Haunting

This is a truly haunting story, it is absolutely horrifying that it's real. It is wonderfully written and really goes in depth almost too much. I found that the descriptiveness and horrific nature of the material leaked into my life making me super sad. But honestly that's the point, awareness should be brought to this horrifying experiences that too many children face.
