Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of Amazing Grace comes an abridged version of the groundbreaking biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the greatest heroes of the 20th century, the man who stood up to Hitler.

A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism. After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Fuhrer and was hanged in Flossenberg concentration camp at age 39. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the 20th century.

Bonhoeffer presents a profoundly orthodox Christian theologian whose faith led him to boldly confront the greatest evil of the twentieth century and uncovers never-before-revealed facts, including the story of his passionate romance.

Thankful For This Account

I'm so glad I listened to this book. I'd only known in general of D.B. ... mostly in quotes of his. There might even be a book of his on my shelf? But I had never known the details of his life, mission, calling, story, character, resistance, theology, etc. All in the context of Nazi Germany.

Brilliant account. Well written. Worth every minute. I feel enriched and edified by this man of God's life.

Totally enthralled by this book!

I loved this biography so much! I'd planned to listen over the course of a few days, but I just couldn't pause it. What a loving and bold man Bonhoffer was! I am inspired by his steadfast convictions, saddened by his death , and thankful to God for his example and legacy of faith.

Go for the non-student version

I think the fell version would have been even better. I was so drawn in but knew pieces were missing that maybe the full version would have had.

Incredible life story

Eric Metaxas does an amazing job weaving Bonhoeffer's spiritual growth and history. Also, the decision to return to Germany to minister to his countrymen is a great reminder to us all to serve God and serve others.

Must read (listen to)

An amazing man and a look behind the scenes of Nazi Germany. Bonhoeffer is truly a hero and saint that we can aspire to be more like. The abridged version was the perfect length for me to listen to. I highly recommend this book.

Outstanding man of God, great bio!

I felt like I got a complete picture of him and his life, which was a concern with choosing the abridged version. The book didn't seem obviously lacking unless the author himself confessed that the details available were thinking and even then he still pieced enough together to give you an idea. Mind you, there were a few areas that things felt more superficial in than others, overall however, a solid introduction to Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

A truly wonderful man

If you could sum up Bonhoeffer in three words, what would they be?

Have enjoyed listening greatly. A great man of the 21 century, who had great courage and
about so little is ever mentioned.. A giant of a man and truly awe-inspiring.
