Editorial Reviews

Bruce Eaton examines one of the classics of power pop, a real testament to the musical power and depth possible from a simple three-piece rock band, Big Star's 1974 album Radio City. Eaton was able to interview the actual people in the room making the album, creating an authentic picture of this Memphis rock band. The band was famously plagued by inner turmoil and marketing problems but here the focus is on the music and what makes a great album, one you want to listen to again and again. Miles Chapin performs the audiobook, conveying Eaton's excitement in a way you'll relate if you, like him, are a self-proclaimed vinyl-junkie.

Publisher's Summary

Released when ELP and Elton John were plodding from one packed stadium to the next, Radio City was a radical album influenced by records that were already deemed oldies and yet sounding like a lean electrical jolt from the future.

Here, Bruce Eaton examines the key ingredients of Radio City's lasting appeal - and through extensive interviews with all of those involved, gets to the heart of the cult of Big Star.
