Publisher's Summary

The true story of a girl from the wilderness settlements of a burgeoning new America who became one of the most privileged figures of the Gilded Age.

Born to a pioneering family in Upstate New York in the late 1800s, Allene Tew was beautiful, impetuous, and frustrated by the confines of her small hometown. At eighteen, she met Tod Hostetter at a local dance, having no idea that the mercurial charmer she would impulsively wed was heir to one of the wealthiest families in America. But when he died twelve years later, Allene packed her bags for New York City. Never once did she look back.

From the vantage point of the American upper class, Allene embodied the tumultuous Gilded Age. Over the course of four more marriages, she weathered personal tragedies during World War I and the catastrophic financial reversals of the crash of 1929. From the castles and châteaus of Europe, she witnessed the Russian Revolution and became a princess. And from the hopes of a young girl from Jamestown, New York, Allene Tew would become the epitome of both a pursuer and survivor of the American Dream.

American princess

Love historical books and this is one of them
It reads like it's a story the author created but it really happened...
and I think this adds to the beauty of this book! The narrator did a good job

What an interesting life.

Allene Tew's had many lives and seemed to live all of them to the fullest. She lived and stayed in many countries. As in all lives there are hardships. However, she seemed to be a strong woman to survive the many loves and losses her life had to endure.

A princess from my back yard.

I live about 45 minutes from Jamestown, New York, therefore I was slightly interested in what this work might include. It was interesting to learn about the history of the area and to discover this intriguing woman whom I had never heard of before. I found myself grieving for Allene in all of her losses praying she had a happy ending to her exterordinary life. This was a great book and I'm going to miss learning more about this great lady.

For one that loves detailed history

I found the narrator to be a bit robotic without much expression but the overall storyline was rather amazing. Taking into account the time period, the gender roles, where she began and her incredible journey,... it truly is rather quite an exhausting tale of survival from my view. Again though, in that era, times were different and you needed to do certain things to survive. SURVIVE SHE DID!

An amazing tale of one woman's account in life from rags to riches and the bumps and hurdles met along the path. There are no fillers or extras in this book, only solid facts of very famous and rich families along the start up of our country and how they came to play a role in her life.

IF your genre,... a good read. If not, ....it would be hard to get through. Not my normal but I found it rather fascinating. Enjoy.
