Publisher's Summary

James Herriot has now become firmly established and accepted as one of Darrowby's veterinarians. He's also married, and lives with his wife Helen on the top floor of Skeldale House. His former boss, now partner, Siegfried, lives downstairs with Siegfried's brother Tristan.

Herriot continues the rich and rewarding day-to-day life of a small-town veterinarian, and we journey with him across the dales, meeting a whole new cast of unforgettable characters - humans, dogs, horses, lambs, parakeets - all of them drawn with the same infinite fascination, affection and insight that made James Herriot one of the most beloved authors of our time. And all the stories are warmly, evocatively told by the world-renowned "voice" of Dr. Herriot: Christopher Timothy.

Like an escape to the countryside.

This book was again, such a wonderful one to listen to. Christopher Timothy is the best narrator I’ve listened to and James Herriot always gets to the heart of the story with his perfect descriptions of countryside and personalities. It’s like hearing stories told by a great friend.

Why the music? And can't he read it in order?

I love James Herriot but I did not like the fact that they had music in between each section. Also in all creatures great and small they skipped a lot at the end so I had to read it out of the book I had, but then in this series they decided to go back in time and read the stories out of order. Never mind, I still love it and think you should read it to. But either read the books that you have or listen to them on audible, don't do both like I did!

A little taste of the old Yorkshire.

Lovely rendition of the Yorkshire accents and heartfelt. reading. Funny at times but sad at other times.

Extraneous Background Noise...

...not part of story and extremely annoying. This is a production issue, and not a true ”performance” issue (Christopher Timothy, as always, is great). Not noticeable on ”All Creatures Great and Small”.

Absolute favorite audiobook series

There are so many superlatives about this series and no negatives. These classics are the epitome of storytelling, and the narration is excellent. Each book will make you laugh and sometimes cry, but with never a dull moment or wasted minute. I'm so very glad I listened to this series, even years after reading them, and they get my highest recommendation.

Well done!

This, the second volume of the series is maybe a bit better than the first volume, All Creatures Great and Small. Mr Herriot strides right into the story as you already know all of the characters. These books are excellent for animal loving children especially any that dream of being a vet. I listened to this with a nine year old who loved it but was confused by the accents (Christopher Timothy is masterful at performing the characters.) and the unusual vocabulary of the Dales people. She needed a translation of “I ken” to “I know” etc. We sat down with a map of the UK and googled the area where the book takes place. Also, images of the type of farmhouses, cars, clothing of the period and she was content to listen and ask a few questions over the hours of listening. I loved these books as an adolescent but the delight remains as an adult. Highly recommend, especially for car trips with kids. One thing about this recording was that there was a slightly annoying background of constant talking behind the narrator. It seemed to be an echo of the narration playing a few ticks behind the main recording. I played the book on my iPad, iPhone and over the Bluetooth in my car and it came through all of them. Maybe just an anomaly of my download. At any rate it was not terribly burdensome.

Not Audible’s best

I have to agree with a previous review: this is not a great production. The reader does a good job but there is ambient noise in the background. At one point there is a whole different narrative going on in the background. I love Herriot but wouldn’t recommend this. I’m sorry I wasted a credit on this one.

Fantastic Narrator

At first listen I did not think the narrator's voice matched my perception of what James Herriot should sound like. But as the stories unwound I made a pleasant discovery. Christopher Timothy is not only accomplished at speaking the dialects but he can seamlessly go between the different voices of the characters. This was a very pleasant listen. I will order more books that Timothy narrates.
