Publisher's summary

A revised and updated edition of the popular self-help book for men that addresses contemporary issues and how they impact the way men deal with anger

Men tend to express their anger differently than women do. Research shows men are often more violent and less willing to confront and deal with their emotions than women. Written by a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of male rage, Beyond Anger shows the angry - and miserable - man how to change his life and relationships for the better.

This book helps men understand their anger by explaining what the specific symptoms of chronic anger are and by showing angry men how their actions negatively affect family, friends, and coworkers. It helps men control violent feelings by using simple exercises - developed especially for men - to identify when and why anger occurs and by helping them form new habits to prevent anger before it starts. Women, too, will learn essential strategies for understanding and helping the angry men in their lives.

Beyond Anger is honest, tough, and real. In this revised edition, Harbin will update references throughout and discuss new topics such as the role of the internet and social media in fueling anger and how to protect yourself against these pitfalls, as well as a discussion on anger and aging, the political landscape and anger, PTSD, a brand-new section on preventing relapse into anger, and many other relevant, timely topics.

Less than an hour

It took less than an hour of reading this to comes to terms with the fact that I had a problem. I sought to read this book simply to appease the voices in my life claiming I had a problem, expecting to find myself nowhere in the pages or examples given. When I began to hear familiar phrases and even variations of my own thoughts I understood I needed help.

Wow. There is a whole lot if useful information in this book, especially for the angry male. I found myself relating to the context within the first couple minutes and became immersed. Made me realize a lot about myself and become more aware of my anger. This book helped me a great deal!

A great resource in understanding Anger.

I wasn't sure what this audio book had in store, but I was happy I had listened to it. It covers a wide variety of anger issues from having small anger issues to being a full blown rageaholic. I didn't realize how much anger I had built up inside over the years. Our mind does a very good job of masking problems that are hard to face head on. I think that everyone should listen/read this book for we all come in contact with angry people on a daily basis. Some of my anger I felt was justifiable, but soon found out that I was wrong. The story was well narrated and flowed consistently with great examples. I think this book can help parents or people who have to live or work with angry people. There are a few people in my life that I wish were more opened minded to material such as this. I would recommend this book to anyone that is willing to learn about anger. I think the wisdom and stories in this book can help a large variety of people. We should all be open minded to personal growth and this book has helped me in that aspect. Thank you and take care.

chapter 8 - 17 glitch & stop.

it's a great book from what I've been able to finish. it won't play chapters 8 through 17 for some reason. it actually forces the app to close entirely. audible hasn't tried to fix the problem on their end.

Needs improvement

While the book does a good job of outlining different types of angry personalities/ways people express their anger, gives interesting and detailed scenarios illustrating the aforementioned, however the build up to the actual strategies was extremely slow and appears bogged down with irrelevant information to the point I nearly stopped listening. The narrator sounded like he was dressing someone down and needed to take an anger management course. Lastly, the tone of the book was demeaning, with curse word used to refer to women, and attacks on masculinity that were not at all professional. The book opened my eyes to my own issues but I would not recommend it and plan to look elsewhere for something more professional put together.

A great book for its time

The book is well written. Thomas J. Harbin clearly knows his subject. However, like many “self help” books it spends a great many pages describing what anger is versus how to control it. While it is obvious that anger must be understood in order to conquer it, too much emphasis was put on the “what” instead of the “how.” Also, some of the chapters are for men in their twenties, thirties, and early forties, and aren’t applicable to men in their fifties.
