A missing worker.
A runaway dog.
A betrayal beyond belief.

When one of Johnny Lister’s state troopers brushes off the report from a local construction site of a missing itinerate worker, Johnny picks up the case herself. Then the same trooper disregards the case of a possible runaway dog from the agricultural center, prompting Johnny to take control of both cases to ensure they get the attention they need. Matters are complicated when, due to a scam, there are no security cameras in the places Johnny needs them most.

Working almost blind and just on her observations and the words of her witnesses, Johnny realizes that both situations are more serious than they initially appeared. Despite a solid reputation, the missing worker seems to have disappeared drunk and in his stocking feet. The dog, with an equally solid reputation for not running off, appears to have been deliberately stolen. Neither case has a clear motive.

As Johnny works, she becomes aware of parallels between the two cases and begins to wonder if they can be connected. Then, when she least expects it, she becomes aware of a staggering misdirection that led her away from the location of her missing person. When Johnny finally finds her last piece of evidence, she finds a motive steeped in betrayal.
