Ben ist neun Jahre alt, als zu Beginn des vierten Schuljahres Anna neu in seine Klasse kommt. Anna ist ein Aussiedlermädchen aus Polen, das mit ihrer Familie nach Deutschland gezogen ist. Ihr Vater hat noch keine Arbeit gefunden und die Familie wohnt in einer ärmlichen Barackensiedlung. Die Mitschüler finden sie komisch und grenzen sie aus und zunächst will auch Ben nichts mit ihr zu tun haben. Doch dann geht sie ihm nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Er ist verwirrt und verunsichert, gleichzeitig machen ihn die unbekannten Gefühle stark und froh.
Er entscheidet sich ihr einen Brief zu schreiben; bald darauf verbringen sie einige aufregend schöne Tage in den Pfingstferien miteinander. Doch dann erfährt Ben, dass Annas Vater weit entfernt Arbeit gefunden hat. Ein schwerer Abschied steht bevor.
Peter Härtling gehörte zu den wichtigsten und populärsten Autoren der Gegenwart. Er wurde am 13. Novemner 1933 in Chemnitz geboren und gelangte nach einer dramatischen Flucht im Jahre 1946 nach Nürtingen. Unterwegs wurde seine Mutter vergewaltigt und sein Vater starb in einem Kriegsgefangenenlager. Die Mutter beging daraufhin Selbstmord. 1948 lernte er in Nürtingen den Bildhauer Fritz Ruoff kennen, der zu seinem Mentor wurde. Nach der Schule arbeitete er als Redakteur bei Zeitungen und Zeitschriften und wurde 1967 Cheflektor des S. Fischer Verlages in Frankfurt a. M., sowie von 1968 bis 1973 Sprecher der Geschäftsführung. Außerdem beteiligte er sich in den 1960er Jahren am Wahlkampf für die SPD und setzte sich später für die Friedensbewegung ein.
Peter Härtling schrieb ausdrucksstarke Reden und Essays, wodurch Hochschulen und Universitäten auf ihn aufmerksam wurden und ihm Dozenturen anboten. Seit 1974 arbeitete er als freier Schriftsteller und widmete einen großen Teil seines literarischen Wirkens der Aufarbeitung der Geschichte und der eigenen Vergangenheit. Zu seinem umfangreichen literarischen Werk zählen Gedichte, Erzählungen, Romane, Kinderbücher und Essays. Dafür wurde er mit zahlreichen Auszeichnungen gewürdigt, u. a. mit dem Bundesverdienstkreuz und dem Deutschen Buchpreis. Peter Härtling verstarb am 10. Juli 2017.
