PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This "powerful, mesmerizing story” (People) is an unflinching look into the abyss of slavery, from the acclaimed Nobel Prize winner. With an afterword by the author and a new introduction by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers.

“A masterwork.... Wonderful.... I can’t imagine American literature without it.” —John Leonard, Los Angeles Times

Sethe was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. Sethe has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe’s new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved.

Some of the most popular and enduring novels and short stories are works of Gothic fiction, including Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Loved this book, rich in metaphor and imagery. However, it was extremely dense and difficult to keep up at times. Also, not for the faint of heart.

Amazing piece of literature

I read the reviews regarding the narration but I disagree I ENJOYED Listening to Toni Morrison's rich melodic voice... she reads it as it's supposed to to 'sound' to the listener.. as for the story I was already very familiar w Beloved Years ago I tried to read it but couldn't get into the story then I saw the movie and wanted to go back to the book, still couldn't get into it BUT I really really enjoyed listening to it and w Toni as the narrator..'
