“A masterwork.... Wonderful.... I can’t imagine American literature without it.” —John Leonard, Los Angeles Times
Sethe was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. Sethe has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe’s new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved.

I had the impression not that Toni Morrison was a poor narrator, as others have concluded, but that she may have been allowed to do the recording into a microphone while at home rather than in a recording booth with a sound engineer monitoring her progress and adjusting for optimal recording.
It's very hard to hear and just doesn't seem recorded properly.
Aside from that the book was thought provoking and inventive and entertaining, and watching the film version right after I finished the book it's interesting to see how even though so much of what's in the book is on film, the average viewer probably wouldn't understand what they were seeing unless they had read the book.
At any rate, I'm glad I bought and listened to the book, it was a chore at times, but it was worth it.
I literally found it best to listen to this with earphones because so much got lost otherwise over a speaker, and when playing on a speaker it REALLY had to be turned up to hear and discern what was being said.
The book is great. It's a shame it will never likely be re-recorded by another narrator.
