Story
When Kristi stopped drinking, she started noticing things. Like when you give up a debilitating habit, it leaves a space, one that can’t easily be filled by mocktails or ice cream or sex or crafting. And when you cancel Rosé Season for yourself, you’re left with just summer, and that’s when you notice that the women around you are tanked - that alcohol is the oil in the motors that keeps them purring when they could be making other kinds of noise. In her sharp, incisive debut essay collection, Coulter reveals a portrait of a life in transition.

Publisher's Summary
The disease of addiction affects 1 out of 10 people in the United States, and is a devastating - often, fatal - illness. Now, from the physician director of the renowned Betty Ford Center, comes a step-by-step plan with a realistic "one-day-at-a-time" approach to a disease that so often seems insurmountable. With a focus on reclaiming the power that comes from a life free of dependency, Being Sober walks listeners through the many phases of addiction and recovery without judgment or the overly "cultish" language of traditional 12-step plans.
It also addresses the latest face of this disease: the "highly functioning" addict, or someone who is still able to achieve personal and professional success even as they battle a drug or alcohol problem. Dr. Haroutunian tackles this provocative issue head-on, offering new insight into why you don't have to "bottom out" to get help. Dr. Haroutunian is himself a recovering alcoholic and knows firsthand the challenges of sobriety. His background and expertise in the field of alcohol and drug treatment give him a powerful edge and perspective that is unparalleled in his field.
Using clear, straightforward language, Being Sober offers a proven path toward an emotional sobriety and a rewarding new life based on gratitude, dignity, and self-respect.
Including a Foreword written by Steven Tyler.

Meh...
Any additional comments?
I was hoping for a more scientific and updated approach to recovery than this. It basically relies on the teachings of AA. If that works for you, great. If you are looking for something more that is more real world, modern and less spiritually based, you may want to look elsewhere.

A must read!
I like everything about this book. The narrator's soothing voice and the way he described everything with sincerity. There are no negative remarks I have for this book. This is a must read for both loved ones of addicts as well as addicts themselves. I have a loved one (to say the least) who's currently several months into rehab). In addition to everything he shared with me throughout the few years of his addiction until the day before he went into detox(5th time) followed by rehab (2nd go round) I was able to better understand what he was, is and will be going through in ways he might not have been able to express himself. I have so much more empathy for addicts now that I've read/listened to this audiobook. This is the 3rd book I've read regarding addicts and hands down the best overall of the 3. I'm going to start listening to it again. From beginning to end. This book offers exceptional guidance throughout all stages of addiction and recovery. Thank you immensely for this gem.

Best addiction self-help book
Dr Harry is world-renowned. Here he relates learning points from his vast experience treating addiction in patients, and his own addiction. He also succinctly relates the scientific basis of addiction. Great narration. I am a physician and scientist (but not an addiction specialist), and I can say this is the best book for addict self help (compared to 4 other addiction books I have read).
