Packed with information

This audiobook is packed with information that was well narrated and explained. I'm not a total beginner but new enough that the material was a great way to build on what I have already learned. Since I don't get to work with other beekeepers, the hive inspections audio were really helpful to listen - in fact, even more would be better! Pausing the audio for a chance to really listen carefully at the frames as fantastic. The ability to go back and listen specific terms, especially as refreshers for seasonally relevant information is really valuable.

To keep the Honeybees alive.

The book is useful in pointing out the important facts about bees and bee keeping. Where would we be without bees is an important question for further discussion.

As far as important species go, bees are top of the list. That’s only the start. We may lose all the plants that bees pollinate, all of the animals that eat those plants and so on up the food chain. Which means a world without bees could struggle to sustain the global human population of 7 billion. Our supermarkets would have half the amount of fruit and vegetables.

For us the bee keepers in Africa and Uganda in particular, bee keeping and forest conservation can contribute to rural poverty reduction to a great extend. Therefore, sustainable use of forests through bee keeping for uplifting livelihoods should top the list in government policies and environmental and development organisations’ programmes.

Save the bees!

Approximately 20,000 known species of bee, the Western honey bee, or Apis mellifera, is just one, although it is perhaps the most commonly known. Debate aside, these bees are still commonly known as honeybee (one word) and will generally be referred to as such in this book. Beekeeping has been known from practically the beginnings of recorded history. They’ve been documented in cave paintings, Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, and various inscriptions from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece. Indeed, some remains from the Middle East suggest that people in this region became so proficient that a single beekeeping operation might have been able to harvest honey from as many as 1 million bees. Wherever honeybees were kept, they were valued, and ancient peoples kept records of how they harvested honey and wax from beehives. There are two main species of domesticated honeybee from which these substances are obtained presently. These species are Apis mellifera and Apis cerana. Apis mellifera is the so-called Western honey bee and is the main species of domesticated bee known in the West, although like its Asian counterpart, Apis cerana, there are notable subspecies.

The book to get -to get serious about beekeeping.

From a beginners standpoint this is an excellent book. This book is packed full of information and an excellent reference. This title gives you the principles you have to know to start seriously thinking about beekeeping.

Over all good survey of bee keeping - and an easy no nonsense afternoon read. If you are thinking about starting your own hobby colony of bees, this is a very good first step. This is the way my Grandfather kept his hives as well.

This book left me feeling well educated and confident. And at this price, it's a deal!

I prefer this book for info on backyard beekeeping

I knew I need bees for the pollination of my apples and blue berries but I knew very about bee keeping until I listened this book. I would highly recommend this audiobook for anyone interesting in bees. I found it well organized and easy to listen and understand even for someone like me who knew almost nothing about bee keeping. Listening this book saved me money from not buying cheap used equipment and has helped me not to make a lot of mistakes. I thought it was excellent audio book to prepare someone like me who has no back ground in bee keeping.

Great Book for Fundamentals of Beekeeping

Though I've been a beekeeper for 5 years but I've found this course is helpful for mw as well like when I started to listening than I've found some mistakes what I need to repair in my next project. For 2 years prior to setting up my hives, I read most every book, blog and forum post I could about natural beekeeping. I'm still learning. I started with top bar hives but switched to a medium frame, foundationless, Langstroth hive set-up 2 years ago. Queen rearing is my next big adventure. I really think a lot of my losses are due to poor queens. I live in PA USA and most queens are southern raised (Georgia, South Carolina). I find they are weak and not consistent in laying. This is an awesome audio book. Very easy to follow along. The audios are excellent and the material is easy to understand. This course is suitable whether you have top-bar or Langstroth hives or nothing have but willing to go through beginning. Thank you Sally R. Ball!

Knowledgable.

This audio book was fantastic. I listen it cover to cover and I retained a lot of very important information about behavior, identification of the different types of bees within the hive and the chores that they perform, general care, etc. I know I will need to refer back to the book for pest control prevention and treatment when the time comes. It was one of those very few books that I've listen that I didn't have to relisten a paragraph because I zoned out. It kept my interest all the way through and I learned so much about beekeeping and the do's and don't's of it. I feel very confident that I'll be successful in my new hobby of beekeeping. My beehives came the other day and I'm putting them together. My bees will be here in 3 short weeks and I know that I will have a smooth start thanks to this book.

Honey Bees are amazing!

Humans have been obtaining bee products like honey and wax from constructed hives for thousands of years. The ancient peoples of Egypt and Mesopotamia are known to have constructed hives for the purposes of rearing large numbers of bees in a single location. This pursuit is still active today, as beekeepers keep large numbers of beehives for the purposes of agricultural production, such as in the case of blueberries, almonds, cloves, and the like. For the man or woman choosing beekeeping for leisure, these large set-ups are probably not in your future, but you should have a basic understanding of constructed hives. There are many different types of commercially available hives, many of them made out of wood. Most of the beehives that are set up or transported to commercial agricultural ventures are the simple and basic wooden variety. These are perfectly viable hives that accomplish the tasks that a beekeeper requires of a hive: being able to provide water and food if necessary, to the hive, and protecting the hive from predators and the elements.

Good comprehensive guide for the beginning

I've found this to be a great audio book for my first year of beekeeping. It's filled with useful information that have helped get me off to a good start. When I want to go more in depth, I go to one of my other books that have more detailed information. It's easy to understand and then use the info given, as are most "Dummy" books. The information given flows well and answers to most questions can be easily found. Great for beginners, or for those at a more advanced beekeeping stage. Definitely will keep it's place in my beekeeping book rotation.
