I loved this audiobook!

This audiobook fascinated and inspired me! It kept me engaged through every chapter, I loved how the author overcame obstacles and lived her childhood dreams of traveling, working in far away places, and learning about different cultures and peoples. Ms. Smith's adventures are not to be missed! Highly recommended!

Fantastic story of adventure and growth

I feel like I have just taken the trip of a lifetime – to places and countries I will likely not see in real life. I absolutely loved this follow up to the author’s first work, it is just as good. This is a roller coaster of fantastic awe-inspiring sights and truly dangerous moments. I love the immediate descriptions and scenes that put you right there – in the lush, gorgeous jungle, or the aftermath of hard violence. And still it is an emotionally honest memoir. The author shows you how all of these experiences shaped her, the darkness as well as the true wonder and magic. An amazing story for anyone up to seeing the world through new eyes

Becoming Amazed: Listening to this book!

I read this book when it was first published and delighted in discovering new worlds. Now after listening to Brenda Smith read her marvelously informative, at times horrifying, often humorous but always entertaining and satisfying I am resolved to spend more time listening to books.

Brenda's clear, pleasing voice made for easy listening. Her enunciation and tone provided a new dimension to this extraordinary story of a woman coming face-to-face with fear, love, understanding, grief, and self-discovery. From her friendship with Amina to her relationship with her USAID associate she draws you into her story and you feel the emotions that she felt. This is to me the sign of an accomplished and excellent narrator.

As to the stories from each country of which she writes she introduces you to the terrain, vegetation, people, and culture, I was particularly taken with the chapter of her stay in Pakistan. Just the trip to the market alone, told in her words, was almost like being there and becoming overwhelmed by that sort of shopping!

I loved this story, the people I met, the places I visited, the fear of the unknown so wonderfully narrated by the author made for an exciting and lively time as a listener. I hope this author continues writing and reading her work.
