Story
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

For nearly one hundred years the magi have co-existed in a forced peace, the black order ruling and those in red robes settling for their subservient role. This peace, however, is threatened when the young protege, Ayres, defies the order and assumes the forbidden white robes. When a break-away sect within the black order begins to gain power, marking themselves with an ancient anti-magi symbol, Ayres and his childhood companions take it upon themselves to uncover the true meaning behind the movement. Hunted by the black magi and struggling to master the white arts he has recently discovered, Ayres must return to the tower that nearly claimed his life, setting off a series of events that could destroy not only himself and the Order, but everything that exists.

Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she's seen her fair share of them, and she's excellent at dealing with other people's tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to uproot her life and move to Boston, it's an emergency of a kind Cassie never anticipated. The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the crew.

On her way, she rescues Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been "ruined" and abandoned on the streets of Rome by her lover. With a typical disregard for convention, Amelia promptly hires her fellow countrywoman as a companion and takes her to Cairo, where strange visitations and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn.

When the papal apartments are burgled in 1901, Sherlock Holmes is summoned to Rome by Pope Leo XII. After learning from the pontiff that several priceless cameos that could prove compromising to the church, and perhaps determine the future of the newly unified Italy, have been stolen, Holmes is asked to recover them. In a parallel story, Michelangelo, the toast of Rome in 1501 after the unveiling of his Pieta, is commissioned by Pope Alexander VI, the last of the Borgia pontiffs, with creating the cameos that will bedevil Holmes and the papacy four centuries later.

High school sweethearts Holly and Gerry were the kind of married couple that could finish each other's sentences, and even when they fought (like over who would be the one to get out of bed to turn off the light each night) they laughed. Holly didn't know where she'd be without Gerry. No one did. And that's how "The List" started...as a joke. If anything were to happen to Gerry, he'd have to leave Holly a list of things she must do in order to make it through the day in one piece.

Story
When American Lexi Maxwell buys a derelict mansion in a quaint English village and sets about turning it into a manor-house hotel, it’s a dream come true. But events take a turn for the bizarre, as a heartbroken ghost makes a nightly appearance and kneels beneath a tree next to a centuries-old ruin, and people in the village keep commenting on Lexi’s resemblance to a woman who’s been dead for a quarter of a century. As Lexi tries to find out more about the man in the ruin, she unexpectedly stumbles upon secrets from her own past.

Publisher's Summary
The uprising of machine consciousness is beautifully terrifying and arouses frightening questions. To what desperate lengths will an android go to fit in? How will we cope with boredom after the machines solve all our problems? Can a robot go insane? Is Artificial Intelligence an existential threat? Are thinking machines our friends? Our enemies? Or both?
In these tales, you will encounter machines that laugh and cry, and kill and make love, and write bad poetry. You will delve deep into that uncanny valley wherein humans and machines share a common, existential crisis.

Some really good stories!!
As with all short story compilations, some are good, some not so much. This collection was no different. I must say that the good ones were insanely good and totally worth having to go through the not so good ones.
The stories were imaginative and thought-provoking, especially those that seemingly attacked the listener's comfort zones. Chambers did not pull his punches on a few of his expertly crafted tales.
I liked the narration on most. Just a few stories missed their mark but like the written words themselves, that was a minor price to pay for some very compelling and intriguing short stories.

11 Intriguing Stories Audible was AWESOME
Talk about twists! The author has an imagination gone wild.
What if you were dying and could make a synthetic version of yourself so that your husband and your #2 could create a happy home for your only child?
Or your best friend fell in love with a robot? Or, crazy as it sounds...you did?
Out of all of these amazing stories...I cast my vote for Continue Program being my favorite...or maybe She Has a Lovely Voice...
Difficult to choose just one!

Beautiful Machines
An engaging collection of short sci-fi stories that all revolve around artificial intelligence. Some are more in depth and longer than others. Each one gives the listener interesting ideas to think about. How far could we advance with artificial intelligence and just how far are we willing to go. The author does a good job with world building and character development. I was quickly immersed in the stories. They have fast moving plots that will keep you interested and entertained. The narrators did a nice job of keeping the narrative flowing but narrator Anna Maria Miosky was a little to robotic when voicing some of the human characters and some of the voices for other characters were hard to listen to from either narrator.

Pretty good sci-fi collection
There are some really good stories in this collection. Trust me. Some are absolute crap, but it was worth it to get through them, because some are gold.
The narration on a few of them was absolutely horrid as well, but just like the stories, others are fantastic.

Far to Robotic for me .
I was given this audiobook free of any cost at my request & in return I offer my unbiased opinion & review . I found this audiobook hard to follow because of the many twists in the story . I also would have preferred the chapters to be longer , some chapters were over in seconds , many in just over a minute or two . Hardly time to hear one chapter before it was over & into the next one . The humor I found to be ok but more was needed . The narrators were very clear & easy to listen to but they seemed to be in a hurry which I feel detracted from their performance . This might be because of the shortness of the chapters . Over all , many people will probably enjoy this audiobook & disagree with my views , it simply wasn't more than 3 stars for me .

It’s ok, doesn’t really keep your interest, can’t really recommend it and the narrator has some annoying voice acting at parts. (Like the son in the first book)
