It is abridged

like the first two books in the series, this one has been seriously cut down, omitting many important details. part of Phelans bloodright trials, much of the battle for tukayyid, and a lot of Anastasius Fochts interactions with Myndo Waterly are all missing.

An old audio book uploaded to Audible

This book while enjoyable is a digital copy of an audio book produced around 2003. As many know, audio books of this period were almost always an heavily abridged version of the source material. Sadly, this is very true for this book and its two prior sisters. Purchasers should be aware of this extreme lack of content.

That being said, this book and its series did a good job at relaying key events and important plot hooks. This means that different groups will have differing opinions:

Fans of Source Material: Any fan of the source material will find it sufficient in scope and easy to digest while giving them the material they need to enjoy the story again. However, if you are they type that hates movie adaptions of books because they cut material, skip this series.

Fans of Scifi: these individuals will find the story bare bones but enjoyable. The pacing is good and the action scenes interesting. Some confusion will happen now and again, but the core characters and their relationships to each other is covered enough to get a snap shot of the setting. However, the story leaves little time to explore character development and thus invests you very little in their fates. If you are the kind that cannot stand to have questions unanswered or you desire more than the average episode of a serialized generic scifi, you will probably find this lacking.

Others: you will most likely find this audio series confusing and frustrating. Who is character A? Where is planet B? What are battlemechs and why are they special? Who was Kerensky? Why did the Star League fall? You will have a lot of questions with few answers. This is NOT a good series to expose you to the expansive Universe of Battletech. If you don’t mind researching the answers to you questions, explore the series as you can get three 3-hour books in a bundle for $20. Otherwise, i’d say avoid this series even though it is one of my favorite settings.

Entertaining Enough

A little corny writing, low fidelity recording, but a very good voice performance. Enjoyed it just fine, overall.

At times, sound effects or music are louder than the performance. Would absolutely purchase an updated recording with a bit better normalization and microphone quality.

Abridged

Too abridged, read the books. Far too much detail was sacrificed for brevity of production.

It's okay

The reader is good. The sound effects sound cheap and loud. The plot is predictable.

missing chunks of story!!

I have now listened to all 3 books in the series, and I can say with certainty that there are chunks missing. Entire conversations that are gone. I have read the original novels, and was sorely disappointed in the amount of content that has been left out.

What's with the wierd music?

Seemed short and jump around slot. More like vignettes interspersed with extreme loud annoying horrible oddball music that sounded more than horrendous jangling of pots and pans than something that belonged in an audiobook.

If you like BattleTech

Then of course you’re going to love these books. When I was a kid it was impossible for me to find the books. I happened upon two at a goodwill, that was back in 2003. Fast forward 15 years and I am just now finishing the third book in that series. I still remember everything from the first two books.

Good but short

Great read, however having read this book myself, I can say several parts are missing. Too short

Great intro to the Battletech Universe

The short 3 part series is a wonderful introduction into the Battletech universe. It is a fun bit of background for any player.
