Publisher's summary

In space, no one can hear you clean....

When Darren’s charge-cart gets knocked off the Earth-to-Mars highway and lost in space forever, he thinks his day can’t get any worse.

When Kelly sees Darren accidentally short-circuit a talking lamppost, and its camera captures her face as it expires, she thinks her day can’t get any worse.

When Pamasonic Teffal, a sentient breadmaker, is sent on a top-secret mission into the depths of the Internet and betrayed by her boss, a power-crazed smartphone, she knows this is only the beginning of a day that isn’t going to get any better.

Join Darren, Kelly, and Pam in an anarchic comic adventure that takes them from the shining skyscrapers of Singulopolis to the sewers of the Dolestar Discovery, and find out what happens when a person puts down their mop and bucket and says "No." Battlestar Suburbia will be loved by fans of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, and Jasper Fforde, as well as anyone who’s ever wondered just how long someone can stay under one of those old-fashioned hairdryers.*

*The answer is: a really very, very long time.

Critic reviews

“Festooned with cunning punnery, sharp turns of phrase, and jokes about emojis and the internet, making this very much a comic novel of our times.” (James Lovegrove, Financial Times)

“Chris McCrudden has created a new division of SF: Science Flotsam. His sprawling space epic is what you get if you cross Dr. Who with an unhealthy fascination for household appliances. Forget alien invasion; in this explosive future you won’t be able to trust your spin dryer.” (Christopher Fowler)

something completely different

what a relief to find a science fiction that isn't military battles or brain twisting alternate philosophy. this one is just fun. Waiting for a sequel.

This book is FANTASTIC!!!

Seriously, I loved this book!! It is witty and creative and thought-provoking. I think the personification of machinery has never been so spot on. I really think it asks the reader to be imaginative and open-minded while show-casing the elements of society which control people. I would've given this book 5 stars even if I never met the author........but Chris McCrudden actually came to our book club via ZOOM (he was in London, so it was the middle of the night) and entertained a lively and valuable discussion about this book and the next two in the series!!!! EEK.....now I shall award 7 stars!!!! Love, love, love this book!

Well Written, Well Voiced, Funny and Engaging.

I am sad that this book isn't receiving more attention, I worry that Books II and III are out already but no audiobook exists for them.

It is refreshing to hear a talented author voice their creation. The voices used by the various characters seem to fit to a tee.

AMAZON-PLEASE EXPEDITE BOOKS II AND II TO AUDIOBOOK!

hilarious and outrageous

Story: Every chapter had me either cracking up or at the edge of my seat and biting my nails! Very engaging and super funny
Performance: Female voices by a male narrator were pretty shrill, otherwise fun :)

Kind of hokey and cheesy

Its not a very thought provoking scifi book, more of a romp using everyday common things in a new setting to tell a story about a boring guy who is forced into heroism. It just didn't click with me.
