The Earth Federation was formed in 2146 and evolved into a Space Federation in 2235. With a Military empire rejected, and space exploration was prioritized.
Then, Andromeda arrived from Mars in the Spring of 2301; it was the latest interstellar ship and was activated at the Mars spacedocks. She had an upgraded warp drive, advanced weapons, and sophisticated communications. Now, visions of a Galactic Empire are inevitable.
Andromeda had three missions: Find the Starship Hawk (that was sent to Procyon in 2290 and lost en route). Locate the settler ship Acarea (that used an obsolete nuclear pulse engine and was dispatched to Procyon 200 years before the pre-warp drive). Then, for Richardson to survey for habitable worlds.
But "The Great Adventure," including the colonization of the adjacent planet to Procyon, was a strange choice since binary stars were unlikely to support life. Whereas Alpha Centauri would've been a logical choice.
Then, Richardson found the Hawk destroyed by aliens and derelict in space. Worryingly, an interstellar war with only two more ships being built, would leave Earth vulnerable.
