Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Battle Scars by Jason Fox.

This is a true story. The events depicted took place during the last decade in an unnamed warzone. The names and locations have been redacted to protect the security of those involved and the practices of the British Special Forces. Out of respect for the KIA and survivors, everything else has been told as it happened....

Jason Fox served with the SBS for over a decade, thriving on the close bonds of the Special Forces brotherhood and the ‘death or glory’ nature of their missions.

Battle Scars tells the story of his career as an elite operator, from the gunfights, hostage rescues, daring escapes and heroic endeavours that defined his service to a battle of a very different kind: the psychological devastation of combat that ultimately forced him to leave the military and the hard reality of what takes place in the mind of a man once a career of imagined invincibility has come to an end.

Unflinchingly honest, Battle Scars is a breathtaking account of Special Forces soldiering: a chronicle of operational bravery and of superhuman courage on and off the battlefield.

Took me a lot of time to read

The accent Foxy had made it hard for me follow..

But I enjoyed the appendix. This real story gets me into a new world I haven't been through before (the life in military) and how hard it is.

I deeply felt the part about self rediscovering and stop thinking about past faults or worrying about the future, just think about the moment (think like a kid).

Thank you Foxy for opening up and sharing your experience. I wish I can meet you one day in the UK. Have a joyful life. ❤️

Good story, mechanical-ish narrating,

When starting, the first chapters the narrating was somewhat mechanical, it really felt like 'reading text', not telling one's story (which is what i expected since the narrator is the writer?). Once i got used to Fox 's voice and 'narrating' style , it became bit better.
The content is solid, i hope him tellin his story about what he went through and what he really felt can help others still being ashamed of mental troubles.

Life changing

At the point of starting this book I was in a hole in terms of my mental health having been diagnosed with PTSD and depression. I was bounced from GP to consultant and wasn't getting any better. Hearing Jason's story inspired me to reach out to Rock to Recovery and to start putting steps in place to better my situation. his story is inspiring and exceptionally brave. Thanks for writing this important book mate, you may have just saved my life.

Unexpected journey

Unlike most veterans autobiographies, mostly about their missions and near death experiences (good as they are) and this started no differently, Jason is equally candid about PTSD and depression that will undoubtedly help other sufferers - he had to narrate it and he did - top bloke.

Totally gripped

Wow what a thrilling story from start to finish. Told in his own words, I really enjoyed how Jason narrated his story which meant that none of the details or emphasis were lost. What a journey this guy has been on, and what an inspiration to hear of his achievements. As a fellow veteran (although not of the SAS) I saw many parallels between our life situations, whether it be the stress of going on tour or the mixed emotions of leaving the armed forces security bubble. I think we can all relate to Jason’s story to some degree. I would definitely recommend this book.

Worth a listen

His voice is really boring in the 1st few chapters. Mono tone. "Bark Bark Bark" is one bit I particularly remember being quite funny, just because he didnt read it with any..ooomph.
The book does pick up though as you go along. The story is interesting, and his story of his mental health is relatable.
I gave the story 4 stars, as it was a bit all over the place in parts.
Only 2 stars for the reading though, as Jason never sent me to sleep for chapters 1-6 until he gets in to it.

Interesting but flat to listen to

Would be better if narrated by someone else. Really interesting stories but the time of voice in the reading sounded forced at times and a different reader would improve this. Some very thought provoking themes and I found the actual book really interesting.

Book review

A big let down of a book really had to take my time to listen to and struggled not to turn off......nothing against Jason but they really should have got someone else to narrate it he’s voice is so boring.

Great insight into PTSD

Many people experience PTSD but not many people van write about it in a meaningful way. Fox writes about it in a way that expertly captures many of the symptoms that anyone with PTSD will experience. More importantly he shows that recovery is possible.

Outstanding! A book that needed to be written.

If you are a veteran or have someone close to you who served in our recent wars I highly recommend reading this book. While I don’t suffer from PTSD myself I was still able to draw many parallels from my time serving overseas. The loss of the brotherhood that is felt afterwards never goes away, however this book explains better then any other I have read on why that is and how we can recreate it in other areas of our lives. Well done.

Brilliantly Brave!

Possibly Foxy’s hardest and bravest act of all writing such a real, raw and descriptive account of his life, struggles and successes.

It’s my favourite book and I have listened to it 3 times back to back.
