Publisher's Summary

Jane Charlotte has been arrested for murder. She tells police that she is a member of a secret organization devoted to fighting evil and that her division is called the Department for the Final Disposition of Irredeemable Persons - or "Bad Monkeys" for short.

This confession earns Jane a trip to the jail's psychiatric wing, where a doctor attempts to determine whether she is lying, crazy, or playing a different game altogether. What follows is one of the most clever and gripping novels you'll ever hear.

Critic Reviews

"Fast. Wicked. Scarily clever, and equally fun for those who like thrillers and those who don't." (Neal Stephenson, author of Cryptonomicon)
" Bad Monkeys has wit and imagination by the bucketload. Buy it, read it, memorize then destroy it. There are eyes everywhere." (Christopher Moore, author of You Suck)

Strange

A strange strange story but not horrible. It is not as good as Lovecraft Country but I listened.

awful

I looked forward to this book from an award winner but it ended up one of the few I've ever just lost total interest in, even at 3/4 through. I gave it an hour to get better and it got worse. m

Really, really bad...no really

Really bad - the narrator, the story, everything. I was sucked in by reviews comparing it favorably to PK Dick and the like. It is not on par with any of his works; it is a truly lame mash-up of fight club, a scanner darkly and some other interesting works. the difference is, this is is a mess of cliches and sloppy writing. the "twists" are clearly made up as the author goes along. that and the narrator is indescribably weak. Look away, dear listener, look away..

Messy but engaging

I'd actually give the story 3.5 stars if that was an option. It's a compelling and (by design) messy story with a lot of deus ex machina moments. Still, I couldn't put it down (figuratively).

Story Falls Apart

By the time I reached the last 1/3 of the book I found it hard to care about any of the characters or the ending for that matter. Bad Monkeys started with an intriguing premise (which called for some suspension of disbelief) but later dedcended to ridiculous and convoluted. I listened to this as a book club choice and was not shocked to hear that no one but me stuck it out to the end.

Story kept me listening

I really enjoyed the story but Allyson Johnson was difficult to listen to for me. I don't think her voice fits the story very well. That being said I still would recommend it

Sooooo stupid!

I made myself finish this because I paid for it but as an avid reader I have to say that this book is terrible!
