Not really about backpacking in the woods

I thought this Audiobook was going to be about how to go backpacking in the woods. It was more general including backpacking as a way to travel in urban areas. Either way I found it was short on useful information.

More Urban than Woodland

The information is good if you are a beginner traveler. It's well thought out and is easy to digest.

This book feels like it should be called "Traveling for Beginners" rather than backpacking seeing that most of the content is for urban environments, money management, and cultural sensitivity. If you've been on a trip or vacation before, you probably already know most of what this book is going to tell you.

Ugh. Heterosexist Sexist Loser Author

I didn't read the whole thing. I bought it because I was getting ready for a backpacking trip last year and while I have backpacked a number of times before I was interested in content that might improve my skills. I missed that this was also about tourist backpacking not necessarily just woods backpacking. I've read maybe 20 minutes of it jumping chapters trying to find some reason not to return it which is what I will now do since I was unsuccessful.

The last straw for me was the comparison (chapter 2?) between a regular vacation and a backpacking trip where he refers to "your wife". It was already pretty clear he was assuming the reader was some heterosexual guy like him but not quite cool enough to be a backpacker (yet), but then it was quite unequivocally clear. I don't have a wife. I could, because actually I am a queer woman who often has relationships with women, but I'm quite sure he said "wife" because he was thinking that clearly I would be a straight cis man like him and that no one else exists or is important or cool enough to be his audience.

When you treat women and queer people like they don't exist you are the source of our inequality. You are sexist and heterosexist and people should read The Backpacker's Field Manual instead since that's a much better more competent book written for people not just this guys idea of the only people that matter - straight cis men. I'm going to return this crap and get my $5 back. It's pretty clear now why it was only $5.

This book as nothing to do with backpacking

the narrator of the book did a good job. But this book has nothing to do with backpacking it's a book on international travel not backpacking so don't waste your time.
